Claims (26)

1. A fluid bed apparatus for coating solid particles, comprising ahousing having upwardly extending walls surrounding a perforated baseplate, a coating nozzle for atomizing a coating liquid, said nozzle beingprovided in the upwardly extending walls, and means for providing flu¬idisation gas through the perforations of the base plate for the mainte¬nance of a fluidised layer, wherein the coating nozzle is provided in a channel for co¬current introduction of a dispersion gas, said channel debouching intothe fluid bed through an orifice having a radius of 5 mm or more.
2. The fluid bed apparatus according to claim 1, wherein theorifice has a radius of 10mm or more.
3. The fluid bed apparatus according to claims 1 or 2, whereinthe radius of the orifice is in the range of 15 to 250mm.
4. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 3, wherein the coating nozzle is a two fluid nozzle.
5. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 4, wherein the nozzle tip is positioned retracted in the channel relativeto orifice.
6. The fluid bed apparatus according to claim 5, wherein thenozzle tip is retracted 5 to 60mm.
7. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 6, wherein two of more nozzles are provided in the upwardly extendingwalls.
8. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 7, wherein the dispersion gas channel and the coating liquid nozzle isprovided in a pre-existing peephole.
9. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 8, wherein the nozzle is displaceable in the vertical or horizontal plane.
10. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 9, wherein the nozzle is turnable in the vertical or horizontal plane.
11. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 10, wherein the coating nozzle tip is positioned in the fluidized layer.
12. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to11, wherein the dispersion gas is received from a plenum below the per¬forated plate.
13. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to11, wherein the dispersion gas is fed from a separate unit comprising afan and, optionally, a heater.
14. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 13, wherein the radius of the orifice is lesser than the radius of thechannel conveying the dispersion gas.
15. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 14, wherein the transition between the channel and the orifice has aconical form,
16. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 15, wherein swirl means are used in the channel or at the orifice.
17. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 16, wherein the housing comprises internal filters retaining particles inthe housing.
18. The fluid bed apparatus according to any of the claims 1 to 17, wherein the perforated base plate covers substantially the entirearea surrounded by the upwardly extending walls.
19. A method of preparing coated particles, comprising the steps of: - providing in a chamber a fluidised layer of particles to becoated, - spraying the fluidised particles with a coating liquid in¬jected into the fluidised particles co-currently with a dis¬persion gas, wherein the pressure in the chamber to dis¬persion gas pressure is 1:1.001 to 1:2, and - drying the coating liquid sprayed on the particles.
20. The method according to claim 19, wherein the dispersiongas and coating liquid spray is injected in an angel of -45 to 85 degreesrelative to the horizontal direction.
21. The method according to claims 19 or 20, wherein the co¬ejected dispersion gas and coating liquid is injected in an angel of 0 to45 degrees relative to the horizontal direction.
22. The method according to any of the claims 19 to 21,wherein the pressure of the dispersion gas is in the range of 0.6 to 1.2bar absolute.
23. The method according to claim 22, wherein the pressure is0.7 to 0.99 bar absolute.
24. The method according to any of the claims 19 to 23,wherein the pressure in the fluid bed chamber is below the ambientpressure.
25. The method according to any of the claims 19 to 24,wherein the fluidised particles to be coated comprise a pharmaceuticalactive compound.
26. The method according to any of the claims 19 to 25,wherein the size of the particles to be coated is in the range of 50μ to10mm.
