Plougraann & Vlngtoft Patent Bureau._ (54) Method and glue application apparatus for manufacturing a wound cardboard tube with a tab attached thereto.

Field of the Invention The present invention relates to a method of producing a wound cardboard tube with a tab attached thereto, a so-called tab tube, in which a tape provided on the back with glue is wound so that successive band windings overlap and bond with one another to form a continuous outer layer on the cardboard tube. Such a method is particularly suitable for making tubes of paper and cardboard strips in a spiral winding machine.

In the manufacture of material webs e.g. in the paper and textile industry, it is customary for the fabricated web to be wound up to form cylindrical rollers, using as a roll core a tube which is usually of cardboard. When further processing the webs, cardboard tubes are also commonly used. When reeling begins, the end of the web must first be attached to the pipe. Often, the end of the web is attached to the tube by glue, but other methods are also used. A solution suitable for example. for reeling roofing paper, consists of utilizing a tab attached to the pipe, one end of the web being placed between the tab and the pipe as the reeling begins.

Such tabbed tubes have heretofore been manufactured in that one side of the cardboard tube has been applied with a glue layer to which one end of the tab has been attached. This work operation has been done manually and it is time consuming.

The object of the invention is to provide such a method of manufacture in which the tab can be formed in connection with the manufacture of the carton tube itself, preferably in the same working operation, thereby obtaining a considerable reduction of labor and time and thus also lower manufacturing costs.

The method according to the invention is characterized in that the adhesive is applied partly as an adhesive strip extending along one edge of the strip and partly as transversely of the strip of adhesive, the direction and distance of each other being chosen such that in the wound state of the strip forming a longitudinal strip extending along the carton tube adhesive joint, by means of which the outer layer is attached to the cardboard tube and the outer layer is cut adjacent to this adhesive joint. Upon such cutting of the outer layer, this will form the desired tab which is secured to the cardboard tube by means of said glue joint.

The invention also relates to an adhesive applicator for use in the practice described and with a pivotally mounted adhesive applicator roller with adhesive application zones and adapted to be able to apply adhesive to a strip extending over the applicator roll in a particular pattern, and the apparatus according to the invention is characterized in that the adhesive applicator rollers comprises a circular circumferential zone and one from this outward helical zone. When said band to form the outer layer of the cardboard tube is passed over such an adhesive application roller, its circular circumferential adhesive application zone may provide the tape with an adhesive edge along one edge of the tape, while the helical zone will provide the tape with said transverse adhesive grooves which the wrap on the cardboard tube will form said glue joint.

142786142786

Said glue application zones may be formed in any suitable manner and may, for example, form elevations on the surface of the glue application roller. However, in a preferred embodiment, the circular zone is formed by grooves formed at one end of the applicator roller and the helical zone is formed by holes bored in the cylindrical surface of the applicator roller. These grooves and holes then, when, for example, immersed in a glue container, can absorb glue and the glue can be removed from the other parts of the roller surface by means of a suitable scraper.

2, fig. 4 et snit efter linjen A-A i fig. 3, og fig. 5 et ved fremgangsmåden ifølge opfindelsen fremstillet produkt. The invention will be described in the following with reference to the drawing, in which 1 shows the principle of the method according to the invention and an apparatus intended for carrying out the method, fig. 2 shows part of an apparatus according to the invention in axonometric view; FIG. 3 is a side view of a detail of FIG. 2, FIG. 4 is a section along line A-A of FIG. 3, and FIG. 5 shows a product made by the process according to the invention.

The FIG. 1, carton tubes 1 are formed in a manner known per se by carton strip 2 in a spiral winding machine. The cardboard tube is caused to rotate and is advanced by means of a drawstring 3. The outer layer of the tube, of which the tab is made, is formed by the outer strip 4, on the back of which a glue rim 6 is applied along one edge of the strip by means of a glue application roller 5. The outer band is wound helically around the carton tube so that successive band windings overlap and bond with each other, forming a coherent layer covering the tube. In addition, by means of the glue application roller, the backside of the outer band is placed across this extending glue rim 7, the direction and distance of which are selected so that the glue-coated parts, when in contact with the carton tube, form a continuous, longitudinal glue joint 8 by means of of which the outer layer is attached to the cardboard tube.

The glue is transferred to the outer band of the 1 fig. 2, which has a pivotally mounted adhesive application roller 5, an adhesive container 9, a scraper 10 for the adhesive application roller and break rollers 11.

Båndets spænding kan reguleres , 142786 4 ved hjælp af reguleringsvalser 13.A heater is provided in the container, e.g. an electrical resistor 12 for heating the adhesive. The tension of the belt can be regulated by means of control rollers 13.

The adhesive surface of the container is maintained at such a level that the adhesive application roller is partially immersed in the adhesive. One end of the cylinder surface of the glue application roller is provided with grooves 14, and in addition, a number of holes are drilled in the cylinder surface to form a helical field extending from the grooves to the other end of the cylinder surface.

As the roller rotates, it is applied to an adhesive layer which is removed by the scraper. However, the glue present in the grooves and holes of the glue application roller does not remove the scraper, but the glue contained therein is transferred to the outer belt when it comes into contact with the glue application roller.

På denne måde anbringes limen på ønskede steder på yderbåndet. In this way, the glue is applied to the outer band at desired locations.

Denne flig er således dannet af ved siden af hinanden beliggende, skråt forløbende og hinanden overlappende stykker 17 af båndet 4.When the glue is dried, the tube is cut to desired lengths and its outer layer is cut with a longitudinal section at the glue joint and unfolded as shown in FIG. 5, thereby producing a cardboard tube provided with tab 16. This tab is thus formed by adjacent, obliquely extending and overlapping pieces 17 of the band 4.

The outer layer is preferably manufactured in the same working operation and in the same apparatus as the spiral tube, but of course the manufacturing can also be done in successive working operations in different appliances.

The tab material may be the same or different from that used in the manufacture of the tube.

Instead of the drilled holes, other recesses can be used to transfer glue to the outer band, e.g. one or more helical grooves. Similarly, drilled holes can be used instead of the grooves at one end of the roller.
