Abstract

A parallelepipedal slab (2) in a flat position is lifted by a lifting device (3) to bring its principal plane into a vertical position, and the slab is maintained in this vertical position by the lifting device. A relative movement in the vertical direction is caused between one or more oxy cutting torches (8) and the slab. the slab is cut during passage in front of the cutting torch. Preferred Features: The lifting device can comprise one or more electromagnets (3) that, for lifting the slab (2), is (are) located in contact with the side of the slab (2) remote from and opposed to the oxy cutting torch (8). The electromagnet (3) is subjected to a combined movement vertical and transverse perpendicular to the plane of the vertical position so that the principal plane of the slab (2) is brought into the vertical position. The electromagnet (3) with the suspended slab is lowered in the vertical direction, after actuating the oxy cutting torch (8) before the slab (2) is passed in front of the torch, until the lower side of the slab (2) is located in a support device (4,7), and the torch is displaced vertically upwards along the slab (2) in order to cut it. The slab (2) can be located vertically on edge or vertically upright. An Independent claim is given for an apparatus for implementation of the oxy cutting process.
