Abstract

The power cable (2) is sensed by using a laser beam emitted by a laser device mounted between the rail tracks (3). The laser beam is directed vertically upwards towards the power cable and the lateral distance of the beam from the rail axis (7) is measured. A vertically aligned laser device can be displaced wrt. a distance scale arranged between the rails. It is moved between the rails at right angles to the track axis until the laser beam is aligned with the power cable. Two laser beams with a lateral separation can be used.
