Abstract

An oil/water emulsion, in particular from car wash installations, if required after elimination of sink material and freely separating light liquid in a buffer tank (3) designed as a preliminary separator (2), is subjected to a sequential biological purification ("SBP" process) by microorganisms in a vessel (9) with charging, mixing and aeration phases in such a manner that, independent of the influx of the emulsion to the buffer tank, the charging of the vessel and the concentration of the emulsion are kept as constant as possible and in a composition as favourable as possible for the nutrition of the microorganisms. For this purpose, nutrient salts containing nitrogen and/or phosphates and carbon-containing substances as supplemental nutrient can be added (17-19) to the emulsion as additional nutrients for the microorganisms. As a result, it is possible to use the "SBP" process with car wash installations even in the case of unbalanced nutrition of the microorganisms and frequently highly irregular influx, without having to fear damage to the population of microorganisms. <IMAGE>
