Abstract

The invention relates to a process for the purification of an aqueous alkali metal chloride solution containing iodine in which oxidation is carried out to molecular iodine and then it is adsorbed on active charcoal. By oxidizing the active charcoal with a solution containing active chlorine before adsorbing the iodine, it is possible to lower the iodine content of the solution to 0.05 mg/l. The invention is particularly useful for purifying sodium chloride brines which are electrolyzed in membrane cells.
