DEUTSCHES PATENTAMTGERMAN PATENT OFFICE
The invention relates to a further development or modification of the method of the Patent 912 216 for the preparation of nicotinic acid esters or of nicotinic acid by the oxidation of quinoline with sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
As already stated in the main patent, the previously known processes are for oxidation from unsubstituted quinoline to nicotinic acid associated with considerable disadvantages.
According to patent 912 216 it is possible to largely avoid the disadvantages of the known processes and to obtain nicotinic acid ester or nicotinic acid in good yield even without the use of a catalyst by adding quinoline with at least 6 times, preferably 7 to 7 times the amount heated ioo ° / cent sulfuric acid to 250 to 270 to 0 and the reaction solution thus obtained at now about 220 0 aqueous with the resultant at this temperature decomposition products of at least the n, 5-fold amount of 50 to 7o ° / cent nitric acid, preferably in countercurrent, then the resulting sulfuric acid solution is heated directly with preferably lower aliphatic alcohols, in particular methanol, the nicotinic acid esters thus obtained are separated off in a manner known per se and, if necessary, converted into nicotinic acid by customary methods.

In weiterer Ausbildung bzw. In a further development or modification of this process, it has now been found that even more favorable results are obtained if quino-Hn is heated to over 100 ° with only about 4 times the amount of concentrated sulfuric acid and the decomposition products of such an amount of SO- to 7o ° / cent nitric acid, the total of which is 5- to 8 times the amount quinoline applied, allowed to act for several hours at approximately 220 0 and the reaction mixture afterwards on nicotinic acid or nicotinic acid free worked up.
A 0-liter porcelain vessel is charged with 140 kg of concentrated sulfuric acid. To this end, 35 kg of quinoline are allowed to flow in over the course of 1 hour, stirring by introducing a gentle stream of air. The temperature is kept at H o °. After all of quinoline has been run in, the mixture is heated to 210 to 220 0 and may be at this temperature within approximately 12 hours 245 kg accrue 65 ° / o nitric acid. During the reaction, a weak stream of air is passed through the reaction material to mix it thoroughly. The sulfuric acid solution thus obtained is then heated at 28 kg of methanol at about 90 0 and the reaction mixture in manner known per se, for example of sulfuric acid and collecting the Methylesters in benzene worked up by distilling off the excess methanol, neutralizing. This gives about 80% of the theoretically 'expected amount of pure methyl nicotinate with a solidification point of 39 ° (bp. 102 to about 15 mm), which is now per se
