The invention relates to a light source which converts electrical energy directly into light energy.
From the Hungarian patent specification 140 587 and a light source has become known from the corresponding French patent registry 868180, which is a high degree of pure crystalline Carbide · existing translucent body has, which is capable of under the immediate Influence of an electric current flowing through the body to emit light, whereby the current has a much lower strength than is necessary to glow the said "body were. This phenomenon can be seen as a current-electroluminescent spark are addressed and results in a so-called kalfes light. This Cold light arises in the said known arrangement as the current flows through a silicon carbide crystal (SiC) flows without this: crystal practically; to warm up.
This phenomenon shows a further way to manufacture economical light sources and 1 forms the basis for the creation of a new current-electroluminescent light source. This consists of a body that radiates light under the immediate egg-nut of an electrical direct or alternating current passed through it, whereby the current intensity flowing through the body is considerably smaller than it would be necessary to heat the body.

According to the invention, the body emitting the light consists of electrically conductive, crystalline tin dioxide (SnO 2 ), which is also activated by traces of an additive in the manner of a fluorescent substance. It has been found that those tin dioxide crystals which have a crystalline structure similar to natural cassiterite are particularly suitable for producing said electroluminescent effect.
With such tin dioxide crystals, experiments were made by placing the crystal between a pair of electrodes was arranged. One of the electrodes was a metal needle, the tip of which was touched the body of the crystal. The other electrode was designed as a holder. the Voltage was applied between the two electrodes. Under the influence of this current the crystal shone white light, and this phenomenon was particularly evident in the vicinity of the needle tip watch. Extensive experiments have shown that the light intensity in most Cases was independent of the direction of the current. Nevertheless, a dependency became in certain folds observed between the light intensity and the direction of the current. In the latter case was the amount of light emitted, all other things being equal, greater when the current was from Crystal to flow against the needle point, d. i.e. when the crystal is connected to the positive pole of the power source was connected. The various voltages used in these experiments were between 5 and 300 volts, with the current strength a few microamps to a few milliamps fraud.
Attempts have also been made with some natural crystals. It was found that all of the natural cassiterite crystals used in these experiments showed the said electroluminescent effect, although the crystals belonged to different occurrences, that is, they contained qualitative, quantitative and proportionally different impurities. These observations confirm that impurities which are present in the crystal and make it conductive also play an essential role with regard to the electroluminescence effect. Many of the natural impurities present in cassiterite appear to be suitable for producing the desired effect. The presence of tin or oxygen in excess compared to the stoichiometric formula SnO 2 of the crystal also appears to be essential for producing the electroluminescent effect.
Three different embodiments of the invention are shown, for example, in the drawing.
