Man erhält gute Silanausbeuten
längerer Erhitzungszeit aus Magnesium- und Siliciumpulver hergestellt worden sind;
Process for the preparation of silanes from magnesium silicide It is
known, silanes from magnesium silicide and ammonium bromide in liquid ammonia
ordinary pressure and temperatures of - 8o or - 33 ° (J. Am. Chemi: cal
SOC. 57 M9351, S-1349 to r353) It was found that instead of ammonium bromide
can use ammonium chloride with surprisingly great advantages, especially if you
works under increased pressure above the boiling point of ammonia. The advantages
are the following. First: ammonium chloride is cheaper than ammonium bromide; second:
with ammonium chloride is reached at temperatures above the boiling point of the
Ammonia (-33 °) and correspondingly increased pressures, rapid conversion and good yields.
The reaction times can be compared to the known method with Ammonbromi.d
from more than a hours to a few minutes and the yields of silanes
bring it from about 70 to over 95%; third: the gas evolved is largely
hydrogen free. According to the known method, the gas contains about 50 percent by volume
Hydrogen; fourth: no highly viscous reaction pulp is produced in the gas generator,
which makes stirring and heat balance difficult; fifth: when evaporating
the remaining ammonia is retained less by the magnesium chloride than by the magnesium bromide,
so that lower ammonia losses occur and lower evaporation temperatures
required are; sixth: the advantage of the high development pressure is that
that there is no risk of air ingress with subsequent explosion; seventh:
in the procedure according to the invention, the plays
Quality of Magnesium Silicide
not as important a role as in the known method. Good silane yields are obtained
in the case of rapid conversion also with Magnes.iumsil, ciden, which at high temperature and
magnesium and silicon powders have been prepared for longer heating times;
eighth: the method according to the invention permits continuous silicon dioxide production,
so that this dangerous substance in continuous processing
does not need to be stored in large quantities. The known method is
continuous development is hardly economically feasible. Embodiment
54 parts by weight of magnesium powder are mixed with 28 parts by weight of finely powdered silicon
mixed and heated for 24 hours in a tube furnace at 500 ° in a slow stream of hydrogen.
25 parts by weight of the silicide thus formed are in a stream of hydrogen after cooling
entered in rooo parts by weight of liquid ammonia, which has a temperature of 20 °
and has a pressure of 9 kg / cm2 and contains 80 parts by weight of dissolved ammonium chloride.
The enamelled development vessel is air-free beforehand by introducing nitrogen
been made. The evolution of gas has ended after 5 minutes. Leave the silane
from the developer during development. Simultaneously with the Sflan
part of the liquid ammonia evaporates. One can use the S.ilane ammonia mixture
easily drain at such a rate that the evaporation coolness of the

Drained ammonia is condensed in a second development vessel and is used
as a solvent for a new analog development. That in the developer after evaporation
The crumbly magnesium chloride remaining from the ammonia can easily be discharged.
With three such development vessels, each with a capacity of about 21, a continuous
