Zur Einsparung von Kupfer bzw. zur Erhöhung der Sicherheit ist es bereits bekannt, den mechanisch beanspruchten Teil des Kollektorsegmentes aus Stahl oder einem anderen geeigneten Baustoff herzustellen. Der obere Teil des Kollektorsegmentes besteht hierbei vollständig aus Kupfer. Es ist auch schon vorgeschlagen worden, nur für denjenigen Teil des Kollektorsegmentes, auf dem die Bürsten schleifen, Kupfer zu verwenden.
