Description
Method of washing and means of performing the method The The invention relates to a method of washing, particularly for household use is suitable for washing laundry and the like and for which the hard washing water before adding the soap, softened by an alkaline precipitant, preferably soda will. The invention also relates to a device intended for carrying out the method Softeners.
Washing with soap in hard water has the major disadvantage that the hardness constituents of the water, especially the calcium salts, form part of the soap precipitate in the form of insoluble fatty acid salts, which on the one hand is a very significant one Loss of soap and a consequent reduction in the washing performance of the detergents and on the other hand to deposits of calcium soaps in the laundry which spoil its appearance and reduce its shelf life.
In order to overcome these disadvantages, the water is available in different Softened way, and especially used in households and small laundries alkaline substances such. B. Soda or mixtures of soda and water glass, used to make the water by precipitating the calcium salts as insoluble calcium carbonate to soften. Such alkaline reacting substances are in the description and referred to as alkaline precipitants in the claims.
The calcium carbonate is precipitated by means of soda the usual temperatures of tap water (about 10 to 20 ° C) very slowly: It has been known for many years that the precipitation can be accelerated by means of Contact substances, in particular calcium carbonate, and numerous water softening processes have made use of this accelerating effect. So one has z. Am Softening systems remove the water mixed with the precipitant via surfaces Calcium carbonate passed. In other methods one has contact substances, e.g. Am the form of powdered marble, added together with the precipitating agents, and These contact substances were then softened with the precipitated hardness components from the Filtered off water. However, such procedures are costly and impractical, when it comes to relatively small amounts of water, such as. B. for household purposes.
The accelerating effect of calcium carbonate is also used in a in the journal for applied chemistry, 1939, p. 392ff. published work deals with water softening with special attention to household linen regards. The work describes among other things in detail comparative experiments about the time necessary for softening with various softening agents, namely chemically pure soda, technical soda, bleaching soda (a mixture of technical Soda and water glass) and chemically pure soda with an addition of 0.1% calcium carbonate in the form of calcite. The author summarizes the results in such a way that that pure soda is much less effective because of the absence of crystal nuclei is available as technical soda or bleaching soda, but this becomes equal after addition of 0.1% calcite. It has now been found that if you add the precipitant, such as. B. Soda, crystalline finely ground calcium carbonate in a much larger one Amount added as 0.1%, the softening speed of the soda far beyond that that of ordinary soda can be increased many times over and that of it resulting precipitate does not react with soap, so that it is not necessary remove it before adding soap.
The invention accordingly consists in a method of washing to which the hard water is first softened by adding an alkaline one Precipitant, preferably soda, the finely ground calcium carbonate in one Amount of at least 1.3%, calculated on the anhydrous precipitant, contains and then the soap is added without removing the precipitate formed will. The invention also relates to a method suitable for carrying out the method Water softener consisting essentially of an alkaline precipitant, preferably Soda, consists of and crystalline calcium carbonate in finely ground form in one Amount of at least 1.3%, calculated on the anhydrous alkaline precipitant, contains. The term crystalline also includes microcrystalline. Instead of pure calcium carbonate you can also use substances that contain calcium carbonate, e.g. B. minerals like Marble, dolomite, limestone or chalk in finely powdered form. The addition of Calcium carbonate is expediently no more than about 14%. The preferred alkaline The precipitant is soda.
While with the addition of o, I described in the above article % calcium carbonate does not soften water faster than with the common technical soda or bleaching soda, permits the use of one Softener according to the invention, the softening of the water with the formation of a against soap inactive precipitate in a fraction of that when applying a usual water softener necessary time, the z. B. reduced to about 1/50 can be, and thus enables a significant shortening of the entire washing process.
The following comparative tests show the acceleration of the softening time by adding various amounts of calcium carbonate according to the invention. With these Water of 19 German degrees of hardness and a temperature of 12 ° was tried C used. When I l of this water is mixed with 1.5 g of technical calcined soda no softening was noticeable after 12 minutes. Was against it the same amount of soda mixed with different amounts of finely ground crystalline Calcium carbonate added, so it was found that the softening in each individual Trap has been considerably accelerated by practically complete softening, namely up to about 3 or 4 degrees of hardness, in the ones shown in the following table Periods of time was effected. In the table are the amounts of calcium carbonate as Parts by weight given per 100 parts by weight of soda. Calcium carbonate softening time I, 3 I2 minutes 2.7 5 -5.3 3 -I3.3 I1 / 2 -These results show the great practical Significance of the invention, which significantly accelerates the entire washing process allows and especially the long wait for the time when the soap to which water may be added, makes it unnecessary.
A suitable water softener according to the invention can e.g. B. have the following composition: 40 parts by weight of technical calcined soda, 4o parts by weight of crystal soda (Na2CO3 ₧ Io H2O), 15 parts by weight of water glass solution of 38 ° Be and 5 parts by weight of finely ground crystalline calcium carbonate.
