Description

Process for making odorless fish liver oils The invention is directed to a process for the production of odorless fish liver oils, in particular of odorless cod liver oil.

It has been found that the constituents of fish liver oils which cause the unpleasant odor can be removed very easily by subjecting the oils in the presence of glycerol or similar non-toxic alcohols to vacuum distillation at the lowest possible temperature with the exclusion of atmospheric oxygen until the added glycerol is completely distilled off. During this distillation, the odorous substance is completely transferred with the glycerine, and an odorless liver oil remains, in particular an odorless cod liver oil, the vitamins of which are fully preserved. The distillation temperature is expediently at 120 ° with a vacuum of 0.5 Torr. However, another temperature can also be selected, for example about 150 ° at about 2.0 Torr. However, it is advisable to avoid a distillation temperature of over 150 °. The mixing ratio between glycerol and C51 is expediently i: i, but other mixing ratios can also be used, e.g. B. 2: 1 or others. Example 10 cc of cod liver oil are mixed with 10 cc of glycerin in a distillation flask, whereupon the glycerin and the odorous substance of the liver oil are distilled off in vacuo. A rotary vane oil pump is expediently used as the vacuum pump; in a vacuum of 0.5 Torr, the glycerine boils at 120 ° C. The distillation flask is heated in a sand bath; Through a double-drawn capillary, pure nitrogen or carbon dioxide is sucked into the flask in a known manner, since the vitamin A contained in cod liver oil is sensitive to atmospheric oxygen at elevated temperatures. The distillation is continued until all the glycerine has passed over. The odor of the liver oil is found in the template as an oily, yellow layer floating on the glycerine. It is a nitrogen and sulfur-free substance that slowly becomes resinous in the air.

The distillation residue of 7.5 ccm consists of odorless cod liver oil. The determination of vitamin A according to Carr-Price (colorimetry of that formed with Sb C13 blue dye) showed no reduction in the vitamin A content of the liver oil.

PATENT CLAIM: A process for producing odorless fish liver oils, particularly cod liver oil, characterized in that the subjecting 01 in the presence of glycerol to a vacuum distillation at low temperature under atmospheric oxygen completion as long, is completely removed by distillation until the added glycerin.
