Abgas-Reflexionsschalldämpfer
für Modell-Motorflugzeuge
Exhaust reflection silencer
for model motor aircraft

The innovation concerns exhaust reflection silencers for model motor aircraft, formed from a tubular muffler into which the exhaust gases are introduced at one end and leave again after flowing through resonators at the other end.

Derartige Abgas-Reflexionsschalldämpfer haben sich gerade beim Einsatz an Modell-Motorflugzeugen sehr bewährt, da die Modellflugzeuge üblicherweise mit etwa gleichbleibender Drehzahl betrieben werden, dieSuch exhaust reflection silencers have proven to be very useful, especially when used on model motor aircraft, since model aircraft are usually operated at a constant speed, which

Silencers can therefore be set to the expected frequency in terms of their resonators. However, it should be noted that the audible sound caused by the high-pressure exhaust gas still consists of a mixture of frequencies from which the resonators in such a reflection silencer can filter out certain particularly disturbing frequencies very well, but there are still frequencies that are hardly affected. This means that although a large proportion of the particularly disturbing frequencies are filtered out by such reflection silencers, the frequencies that are not dampened still produce a disturbing sound.

The aim of the innovation is to dampen this remaining disturbing noise as much as possible. This is achieved in an innovative way by the fact that the casing of the exhaust silencer is double-walled and that sound-insulating and sound-damping material is inserted into the space between the two walls.

Unlike the usual silencers for model motor aircraft, where particular attention must be paid to weight, the exhaust muffler is no longer single-walled, but is now double-walled, so that material can be inserted into the space between the two walls, which converts sound energy into heat through external friction between the air particles moved by the sound pressure and the skeleton of the porous or fibrous material, so that the sound energy emitted by the silencer is significantly reduced. The sound-insulating and sound-damping material, preferably glass wool or closed-cell foam, can be inserted between the walls in the form of an insulating mat.

The drawing shows a schematic example of such an exhaust reflection silencer. The exhaust gases from the engine of a model aircraft are fed into an exhaust silencer (1) which is provided with an inlet nozzle (2) on one side. After flowing through resonators (3, 4) they leave the exhaust silencer (1) via an exhaust (5). The casing of the exhaust silencer (1) is double-walled so that sound-insulating and sound-damping material (6) can be inserted into the space between the two walls. This not only reduces the sound emitted by the outer skin of the silencer, but also converts sound energy into heat, so that overall the sound emission is reduced.
