Description

Electric cable with polystyrene soaked fiber insulation Die Insulation of electrical power cables is usually made of fibrous materials, in particular Paper, built up, wound in tape form on the ladder and with one more or less viscous impregnation mass are impregnated. For the impregnation find before all mineral oils, if necessary with the addition of resin, use. But it is Even the proposal has already become known, the good electrical properties of certain high-polymer plastics, especially polystyrene, for the purpose of cable impregnation to take advantage of. These known proposals provide the cable insulation with the relevant Soak substance in a monomeric state and then polymerize it in the cable. The associated disadvantage is that in this way the cable is very becomes rigid and inflexible. It has already been proposed to avoid this disadvantage been to add plasticizers of various kinds to the substances to be polymerized. This, however, gives the good electrical properties, which are the main reason for the use of these high-polymer substances are partially impaired again.

According to the invention now find for the impregnation of the fiber insulation electrical cable low polymer oil-like styrene polymer use, the under Do not continue polymerizing in the absence of air. This ensures that the cable retains the same mechanical properties as one with the previously customary impregnating agents soaked Cable, but taking full advantage of the good electrical properties of polystyrene will. The impregnation can take place in the manner customary in cable manufacture.

Recently a process has been developed which is the extraction low-polymer, oily styrene polymers are permitted immediately. This method is based on the use of a suitable catalyst, especially in the form of Rutile or titanic anhydride, which, with an acidic solution of iron, aluminum or chromium salts added, left to stand for about a day or more and then is washed out and dried. This process yields an oily polystyrene Consistency consisting essentially of a mixture of di-, tri- and tetrastyrene exists and is excellently suited for the purposes of the invention.

The observation has now been made that distyrene is considerably higher Tri- and tetrastyrene possesses dielectric losses. For example, has a Mixture of tri- and tetrastyrene at the usual cable operating temperature of 4o up to 50 ° C dielectric losses that are so low that they can hardly be measured; the tangent of the loss angle is still below i X io-3. Already small proportions of distyrene in such a mixture, on the other hand, already reduce the tangent by a factor of ten to grow. It is therefore preferred for the purposes of the invention as an impregnating compound a polystyrene that does not contain any distyrene is used for electrical cables. A mixture of tri- and tetrastyrene is particularly suitable. For example, can a styrene polymer obtained by the above-mentioned process is known per se Process for removing the distyrene, for example by fractional distillation, be subjected.
