Description
Sulfur Dye Printing Pastes A major obstacle to use of sulfur dyes in printing technology was previously the fact that many these sulfur dyes, which are suitable due to their other properties, of theirs Manufacture ago have a content of free sulfur, which is usually only low is, but is still sufficient to convert alkaline-sulfur in the alkaline-reacting printing ink to make blackening the copper printing rollers. It has already been suggested Sulfur dyes prior to their processing on printing dough through a cleaning operation rid of sulfur. Besides being such a cleaning extra Costs, possibly loss of dye and also of color strength with it, it also does not guarantee absolute success, since it causes the aforementioned blackening of the Cannot prevent copper rolling with certainty. Apparently is namely at prolonged standing of the alkaline printing ink anew sulfur from the molecular association ab @ splitted, thereby enabling the formation of new sulfide ions.
It has now been found that the sulfur dyes in either of their production still existing or when they are stored or for a longer period of time If the printing inks produced from it stand small amounts of sulfur or alkali sulfur can be rendered harmless if the dyes, Printing pastes or printing inks have salts of such metals mixed with sulfide ions Form water-insoluble precipitates, expediently in amounts of 1 to 411 / o, based on on the sulfur dye.
Salts suitable for this purpose are, for example, copper sulfate, antimony oxalate, cadmium chloride and zinc chloride. It is known that all sulfur dyes form water-insoluble paints with metal salts. It was therefore surprising that the presence of such salts in the stated concentration has no effect on fixability, color strength and other properties of the printing dyes. In contrast, the presence of heavy metal salts prevents the formation of free sulfide ions and thus the blackening of the copper rollers. Example i To a printing dough made in the usual way from 100 g of Immedial Pure Blue (S c hu 1 tz, Dye Tables, 7> edition, Vol. I, p. Q.75), which clearly blackens a copper printing roller, is added with constant stirring a 40% copper sulphate solution in small quantities, until a sample with four times the amount of the thickening of the stem used in printing sulfur dyes no longer blackens a bare copper sheet after an hour of exposure. (The stem thickening consists of 70 g sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate and 170 g potash in 76o g wheat starch tragacanth gruel.) About 3 g copper sulfate are required. It is expedient to add an approximately 20% excess of copper sulfate; in order to intercept any sulfide ions that may form later.
The printing dough obtained in this way does not cause any blackening even after prolonged storage of the copper rollers. Example e For printing dough prepared in the usual way from i oo g Immedialcarbon B (S c h u 1 t z, Dye tables, 7th ed., Vol. I, P. 466/67), which clearly blackens a copper printing cylinder, is given under constant Stir in small amounts a 4oq / dige cadmium chloride solution until a sample like for example; i treated, showing no more copper attack. It's about 3 grams of cadmium chloride required, of which an approximately 20% excess is also used.
The printing dough obtained in this way does not cause any blackening even after prolonged storage of the copper rollers. Example 3 The procedure is as in example z using of 30 ° / aiger antimony & oxal, at solution in place of cadmium chlo, ri, d solution. Approximately 2 g of antimony oxalate are required. Here, too, there is an excess of zoo applied.
Even the printing dough obtained in this way does not cause any blackening after prolonged storage of the copper rollers.
The action of the antimony oxalate can also be checked in a laboratory also demonstrate that one hundred grams of a printing paste made in the usual way is s "deir 2 @ 5 g I-m, mediialcarbon; B contains and does not attack copper, with 2, g crystallized Sodium sulfur added. A sample of this dough containing sulfur and sodium blackens with or without thickening of the trunk, a copper sheet is clearly visible. You stir this dough but with 2 g of finely powdered antimony oxalate and let stand overnight, like that. engages the dough no longer touches the copper sheet.
