Process for the preparation of mixtures of water-soluble aromatic compounds
Carboxylic acids It has already been proposed to use aliphatic hydrocarbons,
mainly liquid and solid paraffins or mixtures thereof with nitric acid
to be treated in order to produce oxidation products that are primarily suitable for soap production
to obtain. It has already been thought of giving coal a similar oxidative treatment
with nitric acid, however, this process has proven itself in the art
cannot prevail because, according to the prevailing view, the effect of the
Nitric acid is only slight here. In fact, one gets in the treatment of
Coal with nitric acid (at least at first) only high-molecular brown-colored oxidation products
of very heterogeneous composition, suitable for any technical use
are completely unsuitable. It has therefore been suggested that (coal in aqueous
To oxidize slurry by means of ozone. In this way it should be possible
to convert the carbon substance almost completely into a water-soluble form,
but the process shows the disadvantage that it requires expensive special electrical equipment
requires and, like all ozone reactions, results in an extremely poor energy yield.
Art.The invention now relates to a process for the oxidation of distillates
from the dry distillation of coal, such as coal tars, coal tar oils,
as well as their precipitation products, coal tar pitches and asphalt with nitric acid.
It has been found, surprisingly, that the treatment of these substances
with nitric acid by no means to the high molecular weight, discolored ones mentioned at the beginning
and technically worthless oxidation products must lead, but that one must define well-defined ones
low molecular weight,
water-soluble aromatic carboxylic acids or mixtures thereof of light color
obtained, provided that the oxidative treatment with nitric acid is long enough
continues until practically all of the starting material has gone into solution
is. The oxidation products obtained in this way are valuable starting materials,
z. B. for the production of the most varied of polymerization and condensation products
Art.
enthaltenden Gasen, einleiten. The practical implementation of the procedure is carried out in the simplest way
Trap by boiling the starting material, e.g. B. tar, with 1 to 15 nitric acid
on the reflux condenser until practically everything has gone into solution. Application of higher
Temperatures accelerate the oxidation process, but then you have to put it in the pressure vessel
work. The oxidizing effect of the acid can also be achieved by introducing oxygen
or such containing gases are promoted. Instead of treatment with nitric acid
the starting materials can also be suspended in water or stirred with water
and in the bulk nitrous gases, expediently N02, mixed with oxygen or such
containing gases.
Beispiel i iooGewichtsteile,'Heizplasphalt (durchMischung
The components that have dissolved are best withdrawn continuously, the nitric acid and the starting material being added in accordance with the components removed, so that the entire process is continuous. The nitric acid withdrawn with the dissolved components is of course redistilled and returned to the process. If nitrous gases are used in a mixture with oxygen, the gas mixture is expediently recirculated and pumped around with fresh gas, replacing what has been used. EXAMPLE 100 parts by weight of heating plasphalt (by mixing carbon tar and the oily components of the hydrocarbon synthesis from carbon oxide and hydrogen boiling above 220 °) are obtained under reflux with 3N nitric acid under 5 atm pressure and introducing oxygen at the boil. The dissolved portions are continuously removed, the solution is evaporated in vacuo and the redistilled nitric acid is returned to the process in the circuit. The asphalt is refilled in portions at hourly intervals. After throughput of 500 parts by weight of asphalt, which takes 24 hours to digest, 56o parts by weight of water-soluble aromatic carboxylic acids remain after evaporation of the acidic solution. EXAMPLE 2 100 parts by weight of black coal tar are boiled for 24 hours in 2N nitric acid (i 1 per 100 g of tar) with the introduction of air. The nitric acid solution is then separated off and the oily residue, which is becoming increasingly solid due to the oxidation, is boiled in 6 times the amount of 5N nitric acid for 72 hours, removing the dissolved matter several times, until all the substance is practically dissolved. The combined digestion solutions are evaporated and give a yield of uo parts of predominantly polycyclic carboxylic acids. The amount and concentration of the nitric acid used has practically been retained. EXAMPLE 3 By suspending rio parts by weight of asphalt (obtained as residue from the distillation of coal tar oils) in 500 parts by weight of water, nitrous gases, predominantly NO., Are mixed with oxygen in a ratio of 1: 2, blown through and renewing the respectively absorbed or consumed gas components pumped around in the circuit. After three days of cooking, most of the asphalt has loosened. The solution leaves 103 parts by weight of water-soluble aromatic carboxylic acids on evaporation.
