Description
KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
The invention relates to the known preparation of chlorine from gaseous hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and hot sulfuric acid in a tower constructed similar to the Gloverthurm and consists in the supply of dry or superheated steam in the latter with the direction from top to bottom. The water vapor, the twice-heating effect is known by its absorption by sulfuric acid, in this case regulated so, the sulfuric acid remains hot already entering DAF in the tower to 125 to 130 0 C. is obtained.
The aqueous nitric acid is gasified by the hot sulfuric acid, which now acts on the gaseous hydrochloric acid in such a way that chlorine and chloronitrous gases and water vapor develop; the latter is absorbed by the sulfuric acid.
It is assumed that the quantity of the hydrochloric acid gas flowing in in the unit of time is known, so that the formula according to the formula:
6 HCl+ 2 HJVO3 = 4 Cl + 2 N O Cl + 4H, O6 HCl + 2 HJVO 3 = 4 Cl + 2 NO Cl + 4H, O
Likewise, sulfuric acid depends on the strength with which it is at the foot of the tower, regulated in such a way that its specific gravity never falls below 1.45 to 1.50 falls.
The apparatus used for this process is shown in the accompanying drawing.
α represents a tower built similar to the Gloverthurm. b is a concentration apparatus for the sulfuric acid to be used, which enters tower α at 1 and, after work, flows through 2 and 3 into reservoir c , from where it flows in by means of pump d the concentrator b is pumped back, e is the reservoir for nitric acid, which enters the tower through the measuring apparatus f at 4. At 5 the gaseous hydrochloric acid and through the nozzles 6 the dry steam is introduced. The latter can be regulated by the valves 7. 8 is the discharge duct for the chlorine and chloronitrous gas produced; 9 and 10 are thermometers on the side of the tower and on the floor and 11 is a hydrometer for continuous observation of the strength of sulfuric acid.
The operation of the apparatus is extremely simple. The whole tower is first impregnated with hot sulfuric acid, which flows continuously into the tower. Gaseous hydrochloric acid, either coming directly from the sulphate furnace or from other sources, is then allowed to continuously enter the apparatus at the same time as an amount of nitric acid equivalent to that of the hydrochloric acid, as is dry steam, so that the sulfuric acid, cooled by the cold nitric acid, is immediately brought to its correct temperature (125 0 C.) and is then preserved. The sulfuric acid flowing off must still show this temperature so that traces of nitric acid do not go away with it.
Concerning the amount of nitric acid to be introduced, there is no need to be very precise Regulation, there, if a little too little nitric acid is introduced in relation to the hydrochloric acid some undecomposed hydrochloric acid goes away with the chlorine gases and easily from the latter can be removed. In the opposite case, with a somewhat too large amount of nitric acid, the latter becomes through the subsequent treatment of the chloronitrous gases in one with strong sulfuric acid sprinkled towers also held back, so that there is no loss Nitric acid can enter. Such a loss of nitric acid could only occur if it went away in solution with the sulfuric acid, which, however, as mentioned above, by maintaining the correct temperature of the sulfuric acid through the simultaneously flowing in Steam can be avoided entirely.
