Process for the preparation of dihydromuconitrile. According to patent 857374 , those alcohols which contain a carbon-carbon double bond in the 2-3-position can be converted in a simple manner into the corresponding nitriles by reaction with hydrocyanic acid in the presence of copper salts, preferably in the presence of diluents such as water . As an example there is, among other things, the production of dihydromucononitrile, starting from r. 4-butenediol, described. The dihydromuconitrile obtainable therefrom is an interesting intermediate for the production of bifunctional compounds and thus for the production of high molecular weight plastics. The invention relates to a continuous embodiment for the production of dihydromuconitrile, starting from i - 4-butenediol and hydrocyanic acid, according to the process of the main patent, and although in aqueous solution. The process according to the present invention consists in adding the butenediol and approximately the calculated amount of hydrocyanic acid to a flowing catalyst solution. At this stage or after it, the conditions necessary to achieve the desired conversion must be ensured, ie primarily to maintain the reaction temperature. In the next stage, after the reaction has ended, the catalyst solution is extracted in countercurrent with the aid of a solvent which is insoluble or only sparingly soluble in water, the unconverted starting material, ie the 1-q.-butenediol, practically not dissolves, but dissolves the reaction product well. Such solvents are primarily aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene. The reaction product can then be separated off from the toluene layer in the customary manner by distillation. The aqueous phase, ie the catalyst solution freed from the reaction product, then flows to a third stage, in which an amount of water corresponding to the reaction is removed from it by bubbling through an inert gas, and then returns to the first stage, in which fresh starting material and fresh Hydrocyanic acid are added. The required pumping of the catalyst solution through the reaction stages described can, in this case, take place simultaneously through the flow of the inert gas according to the mammoth principle. It is advisable to keep the catalyst solution at about 80 ° during the entire cycle, as this is on the one hand a suitable reaction temperature and on the other hand the vapor pressure of the catalyst solution is high enough at this temperature to allow the required amount of water to evaporate easily.
The method described is illustrated by the drawing. According to the scheme described there, the individual reaction stages are carried out in three different reaction chambers. The actual chemical conversion takes place in the vessel B through which the aqueous catalyst solution flows in the direction indicated by the arrow. The catalyst solution enters through line 6 and flows out through line 5. A mixture of 1 mol of butenediol and about 2 mol of hydrocyanic acid is introduced through line 2. The dimensions. of the vessel, the rate of flow and the temperature are adjusted so that the reaction is essentially complete when the catalyst solution emerges from vessel B. The solution then enters vessel A via line 5 and is washed therein in countercurrent with a suitable organic solvent, such as toluene, which enters vessel A through line i. The non-aqueous phase, which thus contains the solvent and the dinitrile formed, is. through the Lei, tuhg q. withdrawn, while the catalyst solution freed from the dinitrile enters the vessel C via line 7, in which it is simultaneously pumped around and concentrated with the aid of a gas stream (e.g. nitrogen) introduced through line 3. The gas escapes again through line 8; namely together with such an amount of water which corresponds to the water of reaction formed. The catalyst solution then goes back into the circuit via line 6. Small amounts of the solvent used in vessel A can still be recovered from the inert gas escaping through line 8. Example The apparatus is filled with 5.5 l contact liquid, which is composed as follows: 1 l, containing 6-50 g copper chloride, 525 g ammonium chloride, 56o ccm water, 1o ccm concentrated hydrochloric acid and a little copper powder to completely reduce any cupric ions present, and otherwise kept at about 80 ° throughout.
About 300 g of butenediol / hydrocyanic acid mixture are added every hour through inlet pipe 2 (186 g of 10% butenediol and 1149 anhydrous hydrocyanic acid). The reaction product is with 21 toluene, the. are added continuously per hour, extracted. The toluene solution is either completely evaporated and the butenedinitrile is obtained by distillation or only concentrated, with most of the butenedinitrile condensing out in the form of almost colorless, pure crystals, which are filtered off with suction. The remaining fractions are obtained from the mother liquor by distillation. The yield of dihydromucononitrile is 70 to 80% of theory.
