Process for the manufacture of sodium hyposulfite The manufacture of
N atrium iv posulphite by reducing sodium bisulphite and / or sulfur dioxide
Sodium amalgam has so far not been able to introduce: the technology; the reason
lies mainly in the fact that the process only yields bad: exploit, because
a part of the hyposulfite formed is further reduced and the resulting
Substances in the acidic medium required for the reaction, decomposing on hyposulphite
works. The addition is used to prevent these undesirable side reactions
suggested by zinc or zinc compounds. This way of working delivers higher
Yields of hyposulfite, but it has the disadvantage that the hyposulfite to the great
Part is obtained as a sparingly soluble zinc sodium salt, from which one -by reaction
with sodium hydroxide first: the sodium hyposulphite must separate. Also can
due to the poor solubility of the zinc sodium salt, difficulties caused by incrustations
or blockages in pipes and vessels occur.
Will man aber so groß;. Quecksilbermengen einsparen,
It has now been found that you can do without having to rely on an addition of zinc
to avoid the disadvantages mentioned above and achieve very good yields.
If the reduction is carried out with a sodium amalgam, this can be much less
Sodium than the usual sodium amalgam obtained by chlor-alkali electrolysis,
thus generally contains considerably less than 0.1% of sodium. To this
Purpose can be: the amalgam draining from a common electrolysis cell
Mix with a great deal of mercury and the greatly diluted amalgam obtained in this way
for: use the reduction by one
it in itself. better known
Way to the aqueous solution to be reduced with intimate mixing of both
Allow reactants to act. But if you want so big. Save mercury,
you can too. introduce a less diluted sodium amalgam into the reduction.,
if the sodium bisulfite solution and the sodium amalgam are layered on top of each other
can act on each other and: essentially only the sodium bisulfite solution-mixed.
Since the reaction between amaligam and bisulfite is very rapid, there are
after a short time in the boundary layer only traces of sodium and new sodium
becomes the boundary layer through diffusion and through influx of more concentrated amalgam
fed from the lower layers. Um: this very desirable concentration gradient
So it is essential to ensure that only
the boundary layer of the amalgam, but not the entire amount of amalgam, is moved.
A method that is well suited for continuous implementation of the process
The device consists of a stirred tank, in the upper part of which there are inlet and outlet openings
for the aqueous solution and -the stirrer are arranged, while the lower part
at the bottom, an inflow opening for the amalgam, further up an outflow opening for
which contains mercury and also baffles for the amalgam. The flow breakers
which, for example, consist of a cross or. star-shaped vertical panel installation
can exist, prevent currents that result from the stirring movement in the
watery layer grasp the amalgam surface and move into the deeper layers
continue. About a disturbance of the concentration gradient by the amalgam flowing in on the ground
to avoid, it is advisable to use sieve-like distribution devices on the floor
of the container for an even distribution of the amalgam flow over the whole
To ensure cross-section of the container.
Während derReaktion sorgt man,
The process can also be carried out in a manner known per se with the addition of zinc or zinc compounds. It is possible to make do with fewer additives and still achieve higher yields than when working according to the known proposals. Example 5o parts of the space Quercury are covered with 100 parts of a 6% aqueous sodium pyrosulphite solution and both layers are thoroughly stirred together. Man. gradually adds 0.3% sodium amalgam to the mercury in proportions of 100 parts by volume, so that the sodium is always only present in the mercury in a very low concentration. The highly diluted amalgam reacts immediately with the formation of hyposulfite and sulfite. By introducing sulfur dioxide, the sulfite is converted back into bisulfite and thus a pH value of 5 to 6 is maintained. During the reaction, cooling is used to ensure that the temperature does not exceed 25 '. The amount of mercury in the reaction vessel is kept constant by continuously draining off an amount of mercury corresponding to the incoming amalgam. A solution containing 1q.2 g of sodium hyposulphite per liter is obtained, corresponding to a yield of 92%, calculated on the sodium used.
