Description
Dies ist die Grenze, bis zu der,die Produkte noch körnig ausfallen.- Process for the production of polyvinyl formals It is known Condensation products from polyvinyl alcohol and formaldehyde, based on polyvinyl esters, by saponification with mineral acids and subsequent or simultaneous acetalization to manufacture. If hydrochloric acid is used, the acid concentration is reduced to 30 per cent limited, when using sulfuric acid the acid content is generally over 50 per cent not gone, because you get so strong when working with highly concentrated mineral acids Discoloration received that a, technical use of the Polyvinylacc-tale was possible. According to the 'known processes, products with a relatively high acetal group content are obtained with low alcohol and especially low ester group content, which are readily soluble, especially in chlorinated hydrocarbons such as methylene chloride. It was It has now been found that polyvinyl formals with a higher ester group content are common to many Areas of application are preferred, surprisingly easy to manufacture, if you polyvinyl esters with concentrated, strong mineral acids of at least 70% acidity saponified and simultaneously or subsequently reacted with formaldehyde, wherein, the acid is simultaneously a solvent for the polyvinyl alcohol and the polyvinyl acetal is. It was not to be expected that the strong acids in the claimed high concentrations have no noticeable effect on the structure of the high polymer starting materials would. According to the new process, acetals can be produced in which there are still about 35 to 40% of the hydroxyl groups contained in the polyvinyl alcohol are esterified are. This is the limit up to which the products can still turn out grainy.
Preferably, polyvinyl forms can be produced in which io up to 15% of the hydroxyl groups are still esterified, 80 to 75% are acetalized and the remainder of about 10% is present as free alcoholic hydroxyl groups. These Formal behavior is particularly beneficial in terms of application technology. You are excellent due to good solubility in the; usual solvents and low viscosity what : the production of high-content varnishes is permitted. By combination with simple or modified phenolic, cresol and xylenal resins, Produce stoving enamels at the usual temperatures in wire enamelling from 3oo to 400 ° below. Cleavage of the acyl groups present in the molecule - insoluble, highly viscous, highly elastic coatings with excellent electrical properties result.
The mode of operation according to the invention has the advantage that the Implementation can be mastered well and that you can use organic solvents such as acetic acid, alcohols or esters and the laborious work-up required can avoid. It also leads to more uniform products. The solution and Acetalization of the polyvinyl ester in the highly concentrated mineral acids goes so quickly in front of you "that: work can be carried out at lower temperatures than has hitherto been the norm can. It is sufficient if the reactions are carried out at temperatures not exceeding 45 °. This means that discoloration of the Formass is practically impossible. Furthermore can the water content in the reaction mixture even when using aqueous formaldehyde so low, up to a maximum of about 35 ° / °, are kept that acetals with a high acetal group content develop.
Zusammensetzung: Acetalgruppen 79'/0, Estergruppen io °/o, Alkoholgruppen i i %.To isolate the polyvinyl formals, the batches are expediently diluted with water, whereupon the desired reaction products precipitate. Example s 250 parts by weight of polyvinyl acetate are introduced into 500 parts by weight of 70% strength sulfuric acid and 50 parts by weight of 30% formaldehyde and the batch is kept at 40 ° for 90 minutes while stirring. It is then cooled to 25 ° and a snow-white, finely powdered polyvinyl acetal precipitates with water, which is washed free of electrolytes in the usual way and dried. Composition: acetal groups 79 '/ 0, ester groups io % , alcohol groups ii%.
Zusammensetzung: Acetalgruppen 80 °/o, Estergruppen 13 % Alkoholgruppen 7 °/o.Examples In 100 parts by weight of 98% sulfuric acid and 38o parts by weight 30% formaldehyde is introduced into 500 parts by weight of polyvinyl acetate and stirred the mixture for 3 hours at 45 °. It is then cooled to 20 ° and the acetal is precipitated with water as a fine, white powder. The work-up is done as usual. Composition: Acetal groups 78%, ester groups 7%, alcohol groups 15%., Example 3 To 100% Parts by weight of 80% sulfuric acid, 50 parts by weight of acetic acid and 500 parts by weight 30% formal, dehyde, is added 500 parts by weight of finely pearled polyvinyl acetate and stir at 35 ° for 2 hours. Then it is precipitated and processed as usual. Composition: Acetal groups 80%, ester groups 13%, alcohol groups 7%.
I %.Example 4 250 parts by weight of polyvinyl acetate are carried at 40 ° 75o parts by weight of 80% phosphoric acid and igo parts by weight of 40% formaldehyde and stir for an hour. That isolated and dried by the usual method The product has the following composition: acetal groups 74%, ester groups 15%, alcohol groups f I%.
