Method for breaking down unsaturated fatty acids Many natural fats
are highly unsaturated and are therefore less suitable for the manufacture of detergents.
Such fatty acids are degraded by treatment with large excesses

Saturated fatty acids which are shorter-chain from acetic acid and hydrogen. This reaction
has been known for a long time, but the formation of unsaponifiable decomposition products has been found
and possibly more noticeable discoloration as a disadvantage.
It has now been found that significantly better results can be obtained

der Varrentrappsche Abbau z. B. mit Ätznatron allein nur unvollständig durchführen;
The addition of cadmium or cadmium compounds according to the invention has an influence
the course of the reaction even in small amounts, e.g. below 5% of the amount of fatty acid,
the composition of the final product or both. Cadmium can be used as a metal, oxide,
Acetate or in the form of other compounds can be added. When responding will
some of the added cadmium compounds are reduced to the metal, so that mostly
is carried out in the presence of metallic cadmium. With the addition of cadmium
allows the reaction to be carried out under - conditions under which it can be carried out without
Addition of approx. Dmium is not possible, or at least much more difficult. So can
the Varrentrappsche degradation z. B. only incomplete with caustic soda;
with the addition of cadmium compounds, the reaction proceeds so smoothly that it is technical
becomes interesting. But also under other conditions, e.g. B. when working with caustic potash
and / or caustic soda and water are obtained by the process according to the invention
a completion of the dismantling, the z. B. in the increase in the melting point
and 'the decrease in the iodine number of the degraded fatty acids can be seen.
The reaction can be carried out batchwise or continuously.
It proceeds with evolution of hydrogen. Once this has ended, the treatment can
possibly after completion of the implementation with a shorter or longer one
additional heating, be canceled.
man nicht besondere Fraktionen daraus abtrennen will.Whereas far more caustic alkali is used in the methods known from the literature
than corresponds to the expected alkali consumption according to the theory
the treatment according to the invention works with good success even with practically no excess alkali,
d. H. with the theoretically required amount of alkali. In the inventive
Treatment is generally an improvement in the color of the fatty acids.
The soaps can be obtained so light in color that cleaning is on the way
over d'ie distillation of the fatty acids obtained from the soaps is unnecessary, provided that
one does not want to separate special fractions from it.
entfernen.Because of their light color, the absence of decomposition products,
the low content of free alkali and unsaponifiable components
the soaps obtained can be processed directly on detergents; Of course
can you previously formed in the reaction products such. B. Salts of lower carboxylic acids
and / or any small amounts of unsaponifiable material formed, in a suitable manner

By the invention. Processes that are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, natural fats as a source of raw materials for the production of high quality soaps are gaining in importance. Examples 1 to 4 To carry out the degradation tests, 100 g of a soybean oil fatty acid (SZ = 203, JZ = 107, VZ - 210) were heated with caustic potash powder in an autoclave for 4 hours. The amount of alkali in all cases was 105% of the theoretical alkali requirement, which is the amount of alkali necessary to neutralize the starting fatty acid and the acid newly formed during degradation, assuming complete degradation and formation of 1 molecule of acetate per double formation. A technical caustic alkali or caustic soda powder with an alkali content of 85 to 88% was used. An autoclave made of V2A steel was used to carry out the experiments, and some of the experiments were equipped with a copper insert and stirrer. The copper parts had been covered with a cadmium coating in the course of previous tests. The degraded fatty acid was isolated by acidifying the aqueous solution of the reaction product. The reaction conditions and key figures for the fatty acids obtained can be found in the table below. Approach: 100 g fatty acid + key figures of the fatty acid
