Description
The oxidation of olefinic hydrocarbons, which are available in sufficient quantities at reasonable prices, is very suitable for industrial production, apart from the disadvantage already mentioned that cleaning is difficult. Under favorable conditions, the oxidation gives products which essentially consist of unsaturated aldehydes (cf., for example, American patent specification 2 4j 1 48-3). For example, aerolein and 2-methylacrolein can be obtained by oxidation of propene and isobutylene, respectively. The by-products include saturated aldehydes and ketones, the boiling points of which are very close to those of the unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes. Aerolein obtained in this way contains z. B. Propionaldehvd and acetone in addition to other easily removable impurities such as formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and high-boiling compounds.
It is known that substances whose boiling points are close together can often be separated by so-called extractive distillation. In the German Patent 739171 states that this method is successful for separation of aerolein and propionaldehyde can be used. There will be a number of potential issues Called auxiliary fluids, which also include water.
In US Pat. No. 2,261,704, the extractive Distillation of crude acrolein with water as auxiliary liquid is described in detail. According to information, 3 to 4 parts of water are required for 1 part of purified aerolein, while the temperature should be above 40 °. The latter condition is in the way met that water from 40 °, preferably even from 70 to 100 °, at the top of the column is initiated. It can be assumed that the steam into which the water enters is a Temperature of at least 5o ° (boiling point of the Aerolein 56 °) and in most Cases a higher temperature.
Surprisingly, it has now been shown that a much lower The temperature range is favorable for separating the unsaturated aldehydes from the saturated ones Admixtures. It was also found to be beneficial to use a larger amount of water than to admit according to the American patent specification.
According to the invention, the extractive distillation is carried out in the presence of at least 80 percent by weight water and carried out at temperatures below 35 °.
It can be assumed that the liquid on the plates in the case of the invention applied high water contents is always homogeneous.
The extractive distillation at low temperature according to the invention Surprisingly, it also has the advantage that the purified aerolein obtained Contains much less water than that at higher temperatures or below normal Azeotropic mixture of water and aerolein obtained under the reaction conditions, which contains about 2.7% water. In the extractive distillation according to the invention Aerolein is obtained with a water content that can be below o.40 / 0.
A mixture of aerolein and 2.0 weight percent propionaldehyde was subjected to extractive distillation in the presence of water, with above in the column the temperature -4 ° and the pressure 62 mm Hg and at the bottom of the column the temperature was 15 ° and the pressure was 152 mm Hg. The reflux ratio was 2. Water was continuously fed in at a point below the reflux feed in a ratio of 9.8: i, based on the mixture introduced into the column. 99% of the aerolein fed in was obtained from the column with one degree of purity of 99.3 '/ 0.
