Description
Process to accelerate the growth of microorganisms by Pressure wave treatment The present invention relates to a method for Accelerating the growth of microorganisms, especially plant microorganisms, such as B. yeasts, molds and bacteria.
There are many branches of industry in which the plant is relative extensive cultures of microonganisms are a prerequisite; this is particularly true for the production of yeast for baking and fermentation purposes, for the production of yeasts, molds and bacteria for pharmaceutical purposes and for manufacture of bacterial cultures for the purpose of warfare too. A subject of the present Invention is the description of a method by means of which it is possible the growth of such microorganism cultures by a multiple of the normal growth rate to accelerate.
According to the invention, a microorganism culture in a nutrient solution treated with pressure oscillations, the oscillation energy of which is so that in the treated Product no cavitation can occur, so that the destruction of the cell tissue the organisms are avoided; the treatment occurs within a period of time from about r: minute to about r hour; this is followed by a growth period, inside which the product is not exposed to Schwin gongen - is suspended. If so, which is an advantage in some cases alternating periods can be used when applying the method be provided during which the product is exposed to vibrations and periods during which the product is at rest. Such a treatment will 'greatly accelerate growth of the micro-congregations concerned.
The processes that occur due to the application of pressure oscillations in the manner described above to accelerate the growth of microorganisms are not fully known: turn as a possible explanation The following hypotheses are given, but it is noted that they are in no way limit the scope of the present invention.
One of the effects of compressive vibrations of low vibrational energy can consist in the fact that each individual cell as a result of these vibrations the agitation of the organism culture continued a new surrounding nutrient solution is fed. Apparently, however, there are other effects: It can be that the metabolism of the individual cells is due to the action of the vibrations is changed in such a way that the willingness to reproduce increases and / or the Life processes of the respective cell are accelerated. It is also possible that the effect of the vibrational energy increases the permeability of the cell walls changed, so .that the entry of nutrient solution into the same is facilitated and at the same time the escape of metabolic products from them is increased, it is known that this substance causes purulent growth of cells influence. It is quite possible that with the method described a Interaction of all of the factors mentioned is achieved.
In accelerating the growth of microorganisms through the Exposure to pressure vibrations of low vibrational energy, it appears that with a given order of magnitude of the vibrational energy the degree of growth in certain Extent with the increase in the period of time during which the product is exposed exposed to vibrations grows. However, this will happen very soon reached a limit. However, it has been found that in many cases further increase of the previous maximum value of the accelerated growth of the microorganisms can thereby be achieved that alternately in each case one period of oscillation and a rest period is provided. The duration of these individual periods is of different length in different microorganisms and soot is unique in each case can be determined to achieve the greatest efficiency in each case in a given total time to achieve. It has been found that the duration of the vibration period & the best time is chosen so that it is approximately equal to the duration of the generation change which is microorganisms; that is, in the statistical sense, that each only the first generation of microorganisms is exposed to the effects of vibrations will. This is followed by a period of rest during which the second generation of organisms grows up. The vibration can occur with the appearance of the third generation of microorganisms reinstall and so on.
As an example of a method according to the invention, a culture of common household yeast from the Saccliaroniyceten family was grown in a cane sugar broth for about 2.4 hours. This culture was in a vibrator having a vibration number of 36o Hz, resembling generally of the type described in the American patent specification 2,138 o5i, subjected to the action of vibrations. In the apparatus used, the membrane of the vibration chamber had an approximate diameter of 6oomm, while the power consumed by the apparatus was about 1 / s-kW. This value could be increased until the membrane vibrations assumed an amplitude that was just below the amplitude at which cavitation occurred. Sufficient yeast was provided to allow continued circulation of the treated material from a container, through the vibrator, and back to the container. The vibration was applied for about ten minutes. : After the treatment, the cell cultures thus treated were supplied with a sufficient amount of Rolir sugar nutrient solution to enable them to grow in a period of a little less than 2.4 hours. Comparative experiments with the growth rate of yeast cells which were not exposed to the action of vibrations and of yeast cells which were exposed to the inflow of vibrations in the manner described showed that the growth intensity of the treated cells is about 50 times greater than that of the untreated cells.
