KAISERLICHESIMPERIAL
PATENTAMT.PATENT OFFICE.
The purpose of this new lighting device is, in addition to achieving lower consumption of gas or other lighting material, to achieve a significantly increased light effect; This is achieved by using the heat emitted by the flame to preheat the air that is being used for combustion and possibly also the fuel gas.
It is known that by preheating the air and gas types required for combustion, an increased temperature of the flame and consequently an increased light effect is achieved.
In the following description and accompanying drawings, there are now four different ones Main variations of this type of lighting that correspond to requirements, but each of them still exists capable of various changes according to need.
Dieselbe besteht aus drei concentrisch ineinandergesteckten, vertical aufgehängten Röhren, von denen die innere g das Brenngas zuführt, während durch die ringförmigen Räume der äufseren Röhren s und / die Verbrennungsproducte abgeführt und die zur Verbrennung nöthige Luft zugeführt werden.FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 show a hanging, fuel gas operated lamp which is either screwed to the side of the wall or, as shown here, is suspended from the ceiling of the room to be illuminated. It consists of three vertically suspended tubes, nested in a concentric manner, of which the inner g supplies the fuel gas, while through the annular spaces of the outer tubes s and / or the products of combustion are removed and the air necessary for combustion is supplied.
All three tubes open down into a large bell jar or ball k, which is attached airtight to the cladding of the outer tube Z with the opening facing upwards.
The light effect emanates from this glass ball by placing the gas flames in the center as possible same burn.
The path of the various gases is now, as indicated by the various arrows, following:
The fuel gas is fed through an ordinary gas pipe r to the upper part of the inner pipe g (see cross section in Fig. 2), from where it flows downwards within this pipe, through the two burners b in the middle of the glass ball k , passed upwards again, flows out and burns with the air supplied through the outer pipe / from above and entering through the open-top end * of this pipe. The products of combustion rise upwardly and escape through the annular space of the pipe s, which is either itself runs in a chimney or e depending on Erfordernifs to an ordinary house chimney leads, as indicated on the drawing by the outlet pipe e.
All three concentric spaces formed by the concentric tubes g, s and I within these tubes are filled with wire mesh or other materials which, in addition to presenting a large surface area, also permit sufficiently free passages for the passage of fuel gas, air and the products of combustion, which arrangement should justify the name heat regenerators or heat collectors.

Die Gasflammen in der Glaskugel k werden also sowohl durch vorher hocherwärmte Luft, wie auch durch hocherwärmtes Gas, unterhalten, wodurch die Temperatur der Flamme erhöht und folglich auch der Lichteffect derselben verstärkt wird.passes through the formed space from bottom to top, gives off the dissipated heat to the wire mesh located in this space, preferably at the bottom, and only the remainder, which is only less intensely heated, to the upper layers of the same. The air supplied from above and the fuel gas in the reverse direction to take a great part of the heat emitted again by the s heat given to the wire nets in the pipes by the BEZW. Through the pipe walls, conduction and radiation are transmitted to the remaining wire networks in the pipes g and I. The gas flames in the glass ball k are thus maintained both by previously highly heated air and by highly heated gas, whereby the temperature of the flame is increased and consequently the light effect of the same is increased.
. One particularly important circumstance, however, requires further discussion, namely the peculiar distribution of the hot air used for combustion and the flame within the sealed glass sphere k. The air descending from the top of the pipe has the indestructible endeavor to continue its way downwards on the comparatively cold inner walls of this sphere, as the arrows show, in order then to join the gas flames in the opposite direction in the most expedient way.
Only because the hot air, which is falling down, has the natural tendency to Choosing the coldest way down and automatically choosing the one directed upwards To connect the flame in the most expedient way for the combustion, i.e. through the fact of this automatic double current in one and the same space is this Regenerative gas lamp has become possible at all.
As can be seen from the description, it is not exactly necessary to place the tubes g, s and / with the regenerators vertically; the same can also be a horizontal or. even assume an inverted vertical position. The latter form is shown in Fig. 4 in the view and Figs. 5 and 6 in vertical section and plan.
The three concentrically nested tubes are so far arrangirt here otherwise be discharged as the outgoing products of combustion through the outward R.ohr, on the other hand 1, the supplied atmospheric air entering through the central tube. As before, the gas pipe g remains in the center and, as the arrows show, carries the gas from bottom to top to the burners b in the center of the glass ball k. First, the air is introduced from the bottom side (see arrow) through the openings 0 into the middle tube / and also rises from the bottom up into the bell jar in order to burn with the gases flowing out there. The products of combustion which rise upwards and a break at the upper walls of the bell jar to the same further reduced go to the proportionably cold inner faces downward and through the annular free space of the outward pipe S to escape through the duct e to forge.
Here too, of course, are the free spaces in the tubes with regenerators, as above described, filled and the heat exchange between combustion products and the for Combustion of the air and the fuel gas takes place in the same way.
Here, too, the automatic circulation of the gases takes place within the sphere k in a manner similar to that described above, but in the opposite order.
folgende Variation darstellt.Instead of concentric tubes other shapes can be used for this lighting apparatus, only one must be careful that the regenerators are grouped next to one another in large areas, but thin layers, so that the heat transfer from one regenerator to another is as little obstacle as possible .
In the case of larger devices, it would be advisable to use corrugated sheet metal instead of smooth tubes in order to increase the sheet metal surface and consequently the conductivity of the heat to be transferred. The inventor also reserves the right to use completely different forms to accommodate the regenerators, such as B. represents the following variation.
The third variation is shown in FIGS. 7, 8 and 9.
Externally, this form is essentially different, but serves the same purposes, as well as the same causes and effects on 1 basis. The whole is represented as a disk 5 (which can also be thought of as a cone) made of sheet iron with a cylindrical extension Z in the middle, which rotates on a stationary horizontal shaft g set up as a gas pipe. The disk and the cylindrical attachment are hollow and internally provided with ribs running radially, so that passages are formed which lead from the outer periphery of the disk to the center point and from there through the cylindrical attachment into the glass ball k attached in front of it. The open passages formed by the ribs are also here filled with wire mesh or other materials suitable for the formation of regenerators.
This apparatus is designed to work without a chimney, in that the regenerators themselves mediate not only the exchange of heat, but also the necessary draft, through subsequent manipulation. As already mentioned, the whole disk with its cylindrical attachment and glass body k should rotate on the gas tube set up horizontally as a shaft. So if the air, as the arrows show, is in the lower part of the periphery. the disk enters the regenerators s, passes the passages in the cylindrical attachment / and enters the glass ball k , in order to burn there with the fuel gas introduced through the gas pipe g and flowing out of the burners b , then the flame or the fire air takes the analogous route up and warmed up. the ducts together with the materials in them which take the place of the regenerators. As the disk s continues to rotate, the regenerators heated above come down and in this way convey the preheating of the air, while the gas receives the preheating through the walls of the pipe g.
In order to increase the light effect of the flame, as well as to regulate the path indicated by the arrows in the hot air in the glass ball k, which is led to the combustion, in this case the reflector r is placed on the shaft, which, depending on the circumstances, either rotates or can also get stuck on the shaft.
With this arrangement, the air emits the heat directly from the same regenerator surfaces, who have absorbed the heat of the exhausting products of combustion without first having to be passed through a wall. Furthermore, the lower and upper parts of the regenerators together a forge, in which the air entering below warmed up in the air, and likewise the hot products of combustion produced upon it the flame will continue its way up.
A forge is therefore completely spared in this device, provided that it is regulated accordingly, but a means must be provided for rotating the disk s and its attachment / continued. Since the rotation only has to take place very slowly, about one rotation in ίο up to 20 minutes, the same can also take place in leaps and bounds, a correspondingly set up clockwork can very well be used for this. The rotation can also be any other source of motion or by hand, as shown here, are concerned by about every 5 to 10 minutes by means of the hand · α have the disc to i / i or Z 1 2 Rotation continues.
■It is good if, as shown in the drawings, to avoid heat loss, the outer tubes or discs and other shapes in which the regenerators can be contained, clad by putting an outer coat around and the one left free The space is filled with slag wool or other suitable material that does not conduct heat well. ■
With regard to the third variation is to be emphasized, it is not DAF's just necessary is to let all the other apparatus revolve on the set up as a fixed shaft gas pipe, but DAF with the fixed gas pipe also · the glass ball k can be thought of together with ciliated columnar approach / fixed ( see fourth variation) in that it is only necessary to subject the regenerator disc containing or blunt cone s on a horizontal as possible axis of a slow rotation, to cause the required heat exchange between the outgoing combustion Producten and guided to the combustion atmospheric air. However, care must be taken to ensure that the rotating parts and the parts fixed by the shaft are as close as possible to one another, in order to avoid leaks.
Instead of turning the disk, it can also be moved back and forth by half a turn thus oscillate, whereby, as can be seen, it is likewise achieved that the regenerators reverse themselves in terms of their location and mode of action.
In this case, instead of being arranged in a circle around the shaft, the regenerators could advantageously be mounted in two oppositely positioned tubes pointing obtuse or at right angles to the axis, which after each change or half a revolution assume a vertical position. The air necessary for combustion then enters the lower end of the regenerator, which is currently directed downwards, and passes through it, in order to burn with the highly heated gases flowing into the bell or ball k located on the axis between the tubes. The combustion products now formed rise up through the regenerator tube, which is currently directed upwards, and escape completely cooled without the need for a special forge.
In Figs. 10, 11 and 12 is the fourth Variation shown.
The arrangement of the regenerators is the same as that shown in Variation III, with the difference that, as already described in III, only the disk s containing the regenerators can be rotated, while the ball k and its cylindrical attachment / are fixed on the shaft g. The petroleum basin ρ is next to the foot of the
Wave, but a little lower, attached to the wall. From the bottom of this, a regulatable tube leads to the burner b, which protrudes beneath the sphere k through a correspondingly made hole in the lower part of the sphere. The burner must be a little longer and wider, but otherwise be set up like an ordinary kerosene burner (in this case a round burner). The screw for positioning the wick is attached below the ball, so it can be easily reached from the outside, while the double draft from inside the ball comes in as indicated by the arrows. To plug it in and to get to the flame easily, there is a second hole in the ball opposite the lower hole, which is provided with a glass or other cover, as shown in the drawing.
Otherwise the apparatus works as already described under Variation III.
In particular, the inventor reserves the right to use all of the regenerative devices described here for purposes other than lighting. These can also take the place of ovens, and one only needs, if light is not required, to replace the sphere k with a suitable cavity made of clay, porcelain, or metal.
Since 1, the regenerators are designed to supply air to the flame torrid, one can also use the same to a part of the torrid air thus formed to transfer to be used for heating, oxidation or other purposes. Variations I and III are particularly suitable for this purpose.
Since in the sphere k the heated air circulates on the inner wall from top to bottom, in order to then move upwards again to the connection to the flames, one only needs to attach an adjustable exhaust pipe from the lower end of the sphere k for the hot air to be discharged .
