Description
Mit ihrer vorteilhaften Wirkung sind aber in der Emul.sionstechrii'k seither auch wesentliche Nachterle verbunden gewesen, die darauf zurückzuführen sind, daß diese anorganischen Stoffe durchweg eine mehr oder weniger große Affinität zu Wasser besi@tzen,.Emulsions for protective coatings Emulsions intended for protective coatings and sealing purposes contain binders such as bitumen, pitch, resin, synthetic resin and the like, as well as emulsifiers, water and optionally stabilizers and fine-grained inorganic substances. The latter are of particular importance as fillers or color pigments for high-quality emulsions, because the type and structure of these substances has a great influence on the effectiveness and durability of the coatings produced with such emulsions. Suitable fillers are finely ground stone meals, such as slate powder, asbestos powder, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, talc, and other minerals are Kalksteimmehl overall bräuchlich, whereas as color pigments preferably Oxydpigmente, such as red and yellow iron oxide, chromium oxide, etc. are used. Depending on the desired color, other pigments known from painting technology, e.g. B. Lithopone ,, titanium dioxide, barium sulfate, zinc oxide, etc., used. The fillers and pigments in the emulsions have similar purposes as the pigments in the oil paints, especially the protection of the sensitive binding agent against atmospheric influences. Since then, however, their advantageous effect has also been associated with essential problems in emulsion technology, which can be traced back to the fact that these inorganic substances consistently have a greater or lesser affinity for water.
With emulsions this results in the formation of a 'homogeneous coating, as it is crucial for the shelf life, the drying process is inhibited and continues adversely affected. As a result of the hydroplhilic character of the mineral Fillers and pigments escapes (read 1 - ,. muls_onswasser, especially at the end, only slowly from the coating; because it sometimes becomes stubborn from the surface of the mineral body held. The water tightness of the surface of the mineral body prevents the wetting by the binder, so that practically often the coating of one heterogeneous structure consists in which the filler and pigment bodies loosely with glued to the binder, but not, as it would be desirable, intimately fused together are. The hydrophilic mineral bodies act to a certain extent as water reservoirs and thus also favor the re-formation (re-emulsification) of the emulsion.
The disadvantages mentioned are eliminated according to the invention by that the surface properties of the fillers and pigments, in this case you hydrophilic in character, converted in the sense that they are water-repellent and become hydrophobic. This is done in such a way as to let the fine-grained inorganic Substances by pretreatment with water-repellent substances, preferably high-boiling substances Oils to be made water-repellent.
in Wasser verteilen läßt.
