Description

Diaphragm for electrolytic cells, in particular for water decomposers The well-known diaphragms for electrolytic cells, especially for water decomposers, consist of asbestos fabrics. Recently there has been a move to the diaphragms made of plastic fabrics, e.g. B. made of polyvinyl chloride. These diaphragms have the disadvantage that they are at the temperatures occurring in water disintegrators are no longer stable and suffer changes in shape due to shrinkage.

It has also been proposed to use pure metal mesh, in particular Nickel mesh to be used for the diaphragms. Since these are electrically conductive, they can easily lead to a short circuit or to undesired polarization or gas discharge to lead.

The invention relates to a diaphragm made of rubber. This material has already found application as a sealing material in water decomposers and has itself proven thereby, d. H. the rubber has proven to be resistant to the occurring Temperatures and has in no way chemically influenced the decomposition process or adversely affects the electrodes used. The diaphragm can thereby according to the invention consist of a porous spongy rubber layer, or it can a rubber fabric can be used. Depending on the requirements, the fabric threads consist of porous or roughened rubber, or the individual fabric threads can composed of fine rubber threads that are bundled, twisted or twisted together be.

To the intended effect of the permeability for liquid and des To increase blocking against gas bubbles, one can also several within the meaning of the invention Arrange rubber layers on top of each other. Should vibrate during the decomposition process occur in the diaphragm constructed in this way, one can proceed in such a way that in each case between two layers of rubber fabric a metal diaphragm is arranged, which thereby at the same time is sufficiently isolated. The rubber fabrics produced within the meaning of the invention are Appropriately provided with a rubber bead on the edge to secure the diaphragm to facilitate. This rubber bead can have a sealing effect at the same time.
