Bisher sind diejenigen Walzen der Papiermaschine, welche vom Siebe durch Reibung mitgenommen werden, wie die Brustwalze, die Registerwalzen, die Niveauwalzen, Spann- und Leitwalzen u. dergl., ausschliefslich entweder aus Messing- . oder Kupferrohren hergestellt worden, welche sich beim Betriebe aufserordentlich rasch vollkommen blank poliren und dann so glatt sind, dafs dem Siebe eine immer stärkere Spannung gegeben werden mufs, wenn es wenigstens einen Theil dieser Walzen überhaupt noch regelrecht mitnehmen und nicht blos auf denselben schleifen soll. Diese zunehmende Spannung des Siebes wirkt aber nicht nur höchst schädigend auf das Sieb selbst ein, sondern sie hat auch den Nachtheil, dafs die Berührung des Siebes mit den zu beiden Seiten der Sauger angeordneten Niveauwalzen eine so minimale ist, dafs keine regelrechte Mitnahme dieser Walzen stattfinden kann. Dasselbe Verhältnifs tritt bei den Registerwalzen ein und hier hat dann die starke Spannung des Siebes die Folge, dafs dasselbe eine Anzahl der Registerwalzen überhaupt nicht berührt, vielmehr frei über einzelnen Walzen schwebt, da es praktisch nicht durchführbar ist, sämmtliche Register- und Niveauwalzen nach einer mathematischen Linie genau auszurichten bezw. mit Rücksicht auf die unvermeidlich ungleichmäfsige Abnutzung ihres Umfanges dauernd in solcher mathematisch geraden Richtung zu erhalten, dafs das Sieb sämmtliche Walzen mit derselben Kraft streift.
