Process for the production of sodium silicate from soda ash
the desulphurisation of pig iron produces a slag in which as soluble constituents
primarily Linde sodium sulide, sodium thiosulphate and sodium silicate, if appropriate
It still contains small amounts of undecomposed soda, while the insoluble components
consist mainly of heavy metals and heavy metal oxides, including certain
Amounts of lime compounds can come.
verbranntem Leuchtgas in Natriumsilikat überzuführen. Hierbei geht man zweckmäßig
There are already numerous proposals for economical processing
this slag has been made. So is z. B. has been suggested the soluble
and to separate insoluble components by leaching with water and
the soluble fractions, d. H. .the mixture of sodium silicate and sodium sulfide under
Addition of silica by sintering in a non-oxidizing atmosphere of
to convert burned luminous gas into sodium silicate. Here one goes expediently
so before that the solution obtained by leaching the slag after evaporation
Mixing some of the water with silica, drying the mixture and then
heated for sintering.
When the slag is stored in the air, oxidation occurs
contained therein
Sulfides to thiosulfate, a process that, for example
can be accelerated by crushing the slag. It has now been found
that one can also use the melting process, where the furnace atmosphere is in contrast to the sintering process
acts only to a very subordinate extent on the treated goods, from soda ash
Sodium silicate can win if one starts from a soda ash, -with the
the alkali sulfides are largely converted into thiosulfate by oxidation.
schmiert. In carrying out this process, it has been found that when
Mixing the evaporated solution, which is the soluble constituents of the slag
contains, difficulties arise with silica. The solution can be
on drum dryers heated with saturated steam, d. H. a temperature
of not having over zoo °; practically only bring up to a water content of r 5%.
The comminution necessary to mix this product with silica
is now made very difficult by the remaining water content, as the product is strong
smears.
According to the invention, the difficulties are overcome by first evaporating the solution to a specific gravity of about 1.5 to 1.6 in a conventional apparatus, then mixing it with the required amount of sand and finally drying the mixture on rollers or similar apparatus to such an extent that that it contains about 5% water. The mixture is then optionally heated in the melting furnace after suitable shaping, with no special conditions having to be met with regard to the furnace atmosphere.
