geringen Mengen an Halogenfettsäure auskommt.Process for the preparation of water-soluble alkali salts of cellulose ether carboxylic acids
It is' known to use water-soluble alkali salts of cellulose ether carboxylic acids
Reaction of cellulose with halogen fatty acids in the presence of alkali to produce.
Up to now one had to work with a large excess of halogenated fatty acid.
The invention now relates to a method in which one: with relatively
small amounts of halogenated fatty acid.
betragen. Man verwendet beispielsweise das etwaEineinhalbfache der Cellulosemenge
an Wasser.
It has been found that. one water-soluble alkali salts of Cel'lulo.seäthercarbonsäuren
by exposure to less than 2.5 moles, but at least 0.6 moles of halogenated fatty acid
to r mole of Ce'llulose if the following conditions are met: The
The amount of water present in the reaction must be less than twice the amount of cellulose
be. For example, about one and a half times the amount of cellulose is used
of water. The amount of water present should preferably be more than one and a half times
of cellulose. Also the amount of free alkali present in the reaction
must be in a certain proportion to the amount of cellulose. Under the free alkali

is bound to the halogen fatty acid. It must be at least 0.4 parts, at most
but i part of free alkali must be present on i part of cellulose. The numbers given
for the alkali refer to sodium hydroxide. Left alone with potassium hydroxide
the reaction does not take place. However, small amounts of sodium hydroxide can be used
replaced by equivalent amounts of potassium hydroxide. The amount of water or alhale
may not move freely within the specified limits; rather it still has to
a certain ratio of alkali to water is maintained. This relationship
should be worn 1: .4 or larger.
entfernt. Dies kann durch Abdestillieren im Vakuum geschehen. Die Aufarbeitung der
Reaktionsprodukte geschieht in: an sich bekannter Weise. The new method can for example be carried out in the manner
be that the cellulose with expediently relatively concentrated sodium hydroxide solution
soaks, squeezes them and then mixes them with dry 'halogenated fatty acid salt.
Instead of cellulose, water-insoluble cellulose ethers can also be used as the starting material
use. The halogen fatty acids used are, for. B. Haloacetic acids. Preferably
one works with, chloroacetic acid, re. Also chloropropionic acid and similar compounds
are useful as etherifying agents. The reaction temperature is appropriate
about 3o to -.o °. Additional water formed during the reaction is advantageous
removed. This can be done by distilling off in vacuo. The processing of the
Although it is already a process for the production of alkali salts from
Cellulose eth-, rcarboxylic acids known in which an amount of halogen fatty acid is added to the cellulose
acts, which corresponds to the amount used according to the invention. With the known one
Processes were however due to insufficient pressing of the alkali cellulose as well
because of the addition of the halogenated fatty acid in aqueous solution, those for the present invention
Characteristic other quantitative proportions of the individual reaction participants are not
adhered to. In particular, in the known method, the amount of during
the water present in the reaction is much higher than in the process of the invention.
As a result, the process referred to did not lead to water-soluble ones, only
to alkali-soluble cellulose ethers. Another known method was
also only get alkali-soluble products because there the amount as well as the
Concentration of the alkali present during the etherification was too low.
