Description
Process for the preparation of water-soluble aromatic carboxylic acids The invention relates to a process for the production of water-soluble, aromatic Carboxylic acids by treating coals, coke or coal extracts with nitric acid, which makes it possible, compared to the previously known method, the success of a practically complete digestion of the starting materials and thus achieving a to achieve the greatest possible yield of such carboxylic acids from the starting materials, which in turn are the starting materials for the production of benzene hydrocarbons are.
It is known that one can use stone and lignite and their conversion products partially decompose by treatment with oxidizing agents in an alkaline medium can. This essentially results in water-insoluble humic acids and their Decomposition products, from which certain amounts can be obtained through further treatment let win of benzene hydrocarbons. - The yields that can be achieved here but are extraordinarily small, and as a rule remain below 30,000 on the coal related, so that an economical production of benzene in this way is not is possible.
Attempts have also been made to convert brown coal through a short-term Treatment with nitric acid to digest. This resulted in nitrohumic acids and nitrophenols in addition to a very small amount of benzenecarboxylic acids. This method is therefore unsuitable for benzene production.
There is no significant consumption of nitric acid. in particular because it is possible to dissolve the nitric acid after separation from the oxidation product in very high easier 'way to regenerate and reintroduce into circulation to them so to be used for further digestion.
The step-by-step digestion with nitric acid is expedient Concentration carried out because the reaction would be too stormy if you the starting material immediately the action of a comparatively highly concentrated Exposed to nitric acid. In addition, the composition of the intermediate products can be determined in this way influence what can be advantageous especially from the point of view that it according to the requirements for which the carboxylic acids to be produced are used should, at times is desired, z. B. by initial use of weaker Oxidizing agent or by oxidation under gentler conditions: a higher one To generate proportion of degradation products that, less widely degraded (higher molecular weight) and their further processing, for example, correspondingly less benzene, however, more higher yields.
Below are some embodiments of the new method given without, however, the invention being limited to those laid down in these examples Working methods is limited. Example 1 Zoo g, stone bald heads ground to 400 meshes, containing 75g carbon, 2d. Hours with eight times the amount 211 nitric acid is boiled, the solution is separated off and the residue is repeatedly taken Removal of the solute for several days with five times the amount of 5N nitric acid cooked until almost everything has gone into solution. The solutions for the various work stages are combined, evaporated and dried. 9i g of evaporation residue are obtained, consisting mainly of polycyclic carboxylic acids.
Example II Roo g of hard coal as above are filled into an autoclave with 500 cc of water. then nitrous gases diluted with air are pumped through, the reaction temperature being gradually increased to 150 °. A pressure of 20 atmospheres is maintained by releasing the pressure. The exiting gas mixture is freed from carbonic acid and fed back into the autoclave. The oxidation products dissolved in each case are removed from the further action of the nitric acid by being separated off, while the water is replaced. After 48 hours, the carbon has completely dissolved. After evaporation, 90 g of oxidation products are obtained in the form of water-soluble carboxylic acids. Prepare g phenols and non-volatile hydrocarbons and 1.5 g pyridine.
Example III 100 g of powdered low-temperature coke with 1500 ccm of 15n Boiled nitric acid. After five hours of boiling, what had gone into solution was siphoned off, the acid replaced and this process repeated eight times. After evaporation 113 g of soluble acids remained of the total amount of the siphoned off solutions; as Residue remained ii g of undissolved material.
