Process for the production of poppet valves for internal combustion engines
The main patent 7o9 697 relates to a method for producing poppet valves
for internal combustion engines with a welded one that is enclosed on all sides by steel
Core made of metal with good thermal conductivity and is characterized in that an initially
valve filled with solid copper, for example, on a rimed one
Wells arranged and at or above the melting temperature of the highly thermally conductive
Metal is heated and cooled again, so that after removal of the edge from
Well, a steel plate protecting the copper is welded onto the plate end of the valve
is. In the further development of this process it was found that another
substantial improvement of the valves can be brought about in the following way.
allseitigen Rand it versehen ist, aufgesetzt.
As is known, by introducing one at operating temperature
liquid coolant brought about good cooling in the cavity of a valve
will. Mostly sodium or a salt with a low melting point is used here.
These coolants are introduced into the bore of the shaft and effect after
they are melted by the operating heat of the engine, by their movement to and fro
the continuation of the heat from the plate through the valve stem to the valve guide. Provided
the valve is not hollow in the plate, these coolants only have a limited effect,
because the heat has to flow through the poorly conductive steel from the edge of the plate to the center of the plate.
Hollow forging of the valve disk or hollow drilling of the same from the shaft side
but it is expensive and difficult. The present invention deals with manufacture
a valve, which is in the plate with a good heat conductor that is solid at operating temperature,
z. B. copper is filled, while in the shaft a known per se, at operating temperature
liquid coolant ,, z. B. sodium, is located. For the purpose of making a
such a valve, just as in the process according to the main patent, is an off-the-plate
up to a certain depth hollow-drilled valve a, its plate c as well
is hollowed out, on the cup made of steel valve g, which with a
it is provided on all sides. The cavity b of the valve is, however
not quite with copper now
filled, but essentially becomes
! in the plate a copper washer j and in the shaft (-I only so much round copper e is housed,
as is desired with regard to the space allocated to the sodium. In the
remaining cavity is previously sodium i or some other coolant in solid
Brought shape. The amount of sodium that is known not to cover the whole room
should fill in, for example, q.ooo of the remaining cavity, and it
is located in the upper half of the shaft. While the upper half of the shaft of
is continuously cooled outside by water or in any other suitable manner
the cup & as well as the valve disc c with the copper / and e to the melting temperature
of the copper is heated and immediately cooled again. The cooling of the upper
Valve half be strong enough that the sodium does not melt. Between
The two fillings contain air or nitrogen, as the oxygen is enclosed
Air is bound by the sodium. With the method described, it is possible
a hollow bored valve in the plate with a high melting point in a single operation,
to give away in the shaft with a coolant that is liquid at operating temperature and
at the same time to weld a protective steel plate to the end of the plate, so that
a subsequent closing of the hole is no longer necessary.
