Core for the production of cast hollow bodies The subject of the invention is a special embodiment of the flexible cores protected by patent 669 825 for casting heavy hollow blocks, in particular those made of iron or steel.
These cores according to the main patent consist of a thin-walled jointless one

to arrange. It's that way
possible to influence the cooling of the workpiece to a large extent and
to regulate.
In itself the use of heating or cooling devices for influencing
from the-. known cooling speed of castings; in the present case will be
these known measures, however, put in the service of the task in context
with the measures of the main invention the formation of surface cracks (shrinkage cracks)
reliable prevention from the outset during the production of cast hollow blocks
and at the same time the structure formation in the most appropriate form
to influence.
wirkt also beim Beginn,der Erstarrung, z.
How important this additional heat influence on the core is, especially in the process according to the main invention, should be clear from the following findings: Experience has shown that shrinkage begins as soon as a solid layer of the cast material has formed around the core and not only after this layer has a certain thickness has reached. The risk of cracks forming on the inner wall is therefore very high up to this point in time. If the core now has according to the invention, for. B. an intermediate layer of lead between the hard-to-melt solid body and the thin-walled sheet metal vessel of z. B. about 0.3 to 1.0 mm wall thickness, the counter pressure of the core against .dem steel, as long as this is still liquid, determined by the difference in the specific gravity of the lead and the steel and by the height of the hollow body. It is about 3 g / cm3 X height (in cm). The shrinking thus acts at the beginning, the solidification, z. B. in the bottom, the block surface, a pressure of only about 300 g / cm2 against. Since the sheet metal jacket is heated to temperatures during casting; where its heat resistance is only very low, the resistance that the sheet metal opposes to shrinkage can practically be neglected. The formation of shrinkage cracks is normally completely excluded already in the first period of solidification.
From this consideration it can also be deduced that precisely in this first period of solidification, which is the most dangerous for the formation of cracks, the presence of a very specific temperature of the various layers of the core is of particular importance. In addition, the solidification processes can be largely influenced. Since the boiling point of lead is higher than the usual casting temperatures of steel, the cooling through the inner wall of the hollow body can be delayed so largely by heating the core that the solidification of the hollow body takes place practically completely from the outside to the inside, which without Acceptance of disadvantageous shrinkage effects was previously not possible. This regulation of the most favorable initial temperature of the core in individual cases and the influencing of the solidification processes of the cast body is used. according to - the invention proposed use of cooling or heating devices in the core body.

Core according to the invention.
A sheet metal cylinder C is inserted into the mold A as a core. A body E is in turn inserted into the core C, the diameter of which is smaller than the inner diameter of the core C, so that the filler D of the core C occupies the space between the insert body E and the inner wall of the core C. Liquid lead or the like is used as filler D. As soon as the cast material B has been poured into the mold A , heat is transferred from the hollow body B to be produced to the core C, the filler D and from this to the insert body E. In order to be able to dissipate the heat given off to the insert body E in a controlled manner the insert body E have a bore F into which means for supplying or removing heat can be inserted.
