Description
Procedure. for the production of easily suspendable, powdery Copper oxychloride preparations for plant protection purposes. To combat downy mildew in viticulture and hops and various fungal diseases in fruit and vegetable growing are in recent times often in place of the well-known Bordeaux broth, which essentially represents a copper hydroxide suspension, copper oxychloride suspension_- used. The farmer himself makes these suspensions from concentrated copper oxychloride preparations here, which are supplied to him by the industry, such concentrated I: over-oxychloride preparations are known in powdery, pasty or liquid or thixotropic form. The powder preparations, which are particularly easy to use, are dried from-on Copper oxychloride precipitates produced by wet means, which are usually still with a protective colloid and an inert carrier material, e.g. B. calcium carbonate mixed will; manufactured. The recovery of the copper oxychloride precipitates used as starting material usually takes place through the simultaneous treatment of copper metal and copper chloride solution with air or by precipitation of a copper chloride solution with alkali or by precipitation a copper sulphate solution with chloride and alkali and subsequent filtration or Centrifuge. These powder preparations have the disadvantage that 3 the suspensions produced from it are not as stable as they were almost before exclusively used Bordeaux broth. This poor stability of the suspensions both have powder preparations made from relatively coarsely dispersed copper oxychloride precipitates are produced, as well as those, for their representation finely dispersed copper oxychloride, such as it is obtained by precipitation with alkali. There is at most a difference therein, d% ß for the preparations made from finely dispersed starting material part of the suspended powder remains floating for a very long time and so has good stability the suspension pretends to be, while actually already a very large part of the powder is sedimented fairly quickly. This evil of bad suspensibility cannot be removed by grinding the powder finely.
Since both the coarsely dispersed and the finely dispersed copper oxychloride precipitates produced powder have poor suspendability, it must be hopeless appear, by choosing a particular copper oxychloride starting material, the manufacture of powders that float well in water.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that powder preparations with excellent suspension properties in water are obtained if a copper oxychloride precipitate is used which contains at least 75 percent by weight, calculated as dry matter, of particles with a diameter between 0.3 and z.0 microns. Such copper oxychlorides can be used, for. B. win by peptizing the heterodisperse precipitate obtained by any method with the help of a protective colloid in water and then subjecting it to a slurry and thereby completely or mainly eliminating the proportions lying outside the above particle size limits. However, it is also possible to obtain a precipitate which corresponds to the particle size requirement directly; for this it is only necessary, in the known processes for copper oxychloride production, to change the working conditions, such as concentrations, temperature, rate of precipitation, rate of agitation, etc., and to select those conditions. which give a copper oxychloride of the correct dispersity. For example, one can proceed in such a way that the equivalent copper chloride solution of zoo to aoo g per liter is slowly run into about 60 ° warm milk of lime with good mechanical stirring and the resulting precipitate is filtered off and washed. Depending on the size of the vessel in which you are working and depending on the effectiveness of the stirring, it may be necessary to make certain small changes in the working conditions mentioned. which can easily be determined by a few experiments.
To achieve the greatest possible suspension, it is advisable to the copper oxychloride is given a protective colloid before drying. such as dextrin, cellulose waste liquor, Add molasses and the like. It can also be advantageous to use the precipitate to mix with an inert carrier material. The carrier material must be selected so that it does not adversely affect the suspension capacity of the preparation. As suitable have been found to be disper se hydrophilic substances such. B. finely divided, cold precipitated Barium sulfate. Preparations that are particularly easy to suspend are obtained, “run one Added to clay or kaolin.
The completely dried material is then ground and, if necessary sifted.
Determination of the particle size of the starting material Copper oxychloride or the distribution curve is carried out in the usual way Sedimentation alysis. The procedure here is expediently so that the still moist -Precipitation with water and a peptizer, e.g. B. sulphite cellulose waste liquor, to a thin pulp. Stirred evenly, this then to about 0.3 g Cu per liter and dilute about 3 liters of this suspension in a glass vessel on a vibration-free Leaves places. From time to time a certain layer height, e.g. B. 6o mm below the liquid level, samples taken and analyzed and thus tracked the decrease in copper concentrations at this level. The evaluation of the experiment, d. H. the particle size is calculated in the usual way with the help of Stokes's formula. The Stokes formula is at non-spherical particles not exactly. However, this fact is not taken into account. All information on particle sizes in the present patent specification is to be understood as that they are based on sedimentation data according to Stokes equation: - without correction with regard to the particle shape -to be determined. In the sedimentation studies it is important to ensure that the peptizer is correctly dosed, in such a way that If the precipitate is reliably peptized, it must also be checked whether it is not subsequent coagulation occurs.
I In a wooden tub with a capacity of about 5m3 and provided with a stirrer, 2m3 of sieved milk of lime with 75 g Ca0 per liter are heated by direct steam to about 600 and a copper chloride solution of 15o g Cu per liter is allowed to run in with constant stirring. As soon as the solution has run in for around 1.9 ms, small samples are taken from time to time and checked by spotting the suspension with ferrocyanic potassium on filter paper to see whether there is already dissolved copper. As soon as this is the case, the feed of the copper solution is interrupted and a small amount of milk of lime is added until the dissolved copper disappears. The precipitate formed, which flocculates relatively quickly (in the absence of a protective colloid), is washed by sedimentation until the washing water shows only weak chloride reactions. The last wash water is now drawn off particularly carefully, the suspension is allowed to run in portions into a mixer and mixed there with 30 kg each of sulphite cellulose waste liquor (509, "dry matter content) and 180 kaolin for every 100 kg of copper present. The intimately mixed mass is then mixed in dried in a drying cabinet at a temperature below 10000 and ground in a cross beater mill.
The nature of the end product obtained here depends to a certain extent Dimensions of the arrangement of the apparatus, such as dimensions, intensity of stirring, etc., and details of the mode of operation, such as the rate of the inflow of the copper liquor, Temperature and the like. If the product is not the cheapest in the test Floatability, then it is necessary to work something mentioned to change. The easiest and usually sufficient temperature is to measure the temperature the presented Kalkmi_I to change, in the sense that, if that oxychloride obtained is too fine, the temperature increases and, if it is too coarse, the temperature decreased.
A relatively narrow but high wooden tub, which has a wooden grate in the lower part, is filled with copper waste (sheet metal chips, wires, etc.) and a copper chloride solution of about 50 to 100 g Cu per liter. Air is blown through the solution through nozzles under the grate. The oxychloride formed is filtered off from time to time with the help of a filter press and washed until the washing water running off contains only traces of soluble chloride and copper. The filtrate returns to the reaction vat. The filter cakes are mixed in a kneading machine with 150/0 of their weight of sulphite waste liquor. The mass, which has become quite fluid, is now distributed in a large number of about 50 cm high wooden vessels with water to form a suspension of about 50 g Cu per liter, which does not cause any problems due to the peptizing effect of the sulphite cellulose waste. After 2 weeks, carefully remove about 3/4 of the amount of liquid from the individual vessels. The suspension drawn off contains the oxychloride particles which are too fine and is used for other purposes. The vessels are then filled up again with water with the addition of a small amount of sulphite cellulose waste liquor, the sediment is stirred up and left to sediment again. After 3 to .a. Days, the suspension is drawn off from the sludge sitting on the bottom, centrifuged and processed with sulphite cellulose waste liquor and kaolin, as indicated in Example 1, to give a copper oxychloride powder preparation. The mud . is taken up again with water containing sulphite cellulose waste liquor and allowed to sediment again for 3 to 4 days, further useful oxychloride being obtained. The now remaining sludge, which contains the excessively coarse IZ pottery oxychloride components, is used for other purposes.
The sedimentation work can be shortened and simplified quite considerably if one takes care in the production of the copper oxychloride that none considerable amounts of too fine proportions arise. The first two-week sedimentation can then be omitted. The easiest way to achieve this goal is to use the Reaction between copper metal, copper chloride and air occurs at elevated temperature can be carried out. If you work in vats of a sufficiently large diameter or the vats are insulated against heat loss, this is usually enough own heat of reaction. By systematic variations of the individual health conditions, such as Speed and type of air supply, working temperature, concentration of the copper chloride liquor etc .. - it will be easy to achieve after some time of operation, for a certain apparatus and a certain kind of copper waste those conditions to find a copper oxychloride from the outset that is within the required range Particle size limit is so that ultimately the relatively cumbersome Sedimentation can be dispensed with at all.
