Bekannte Verfahren zur Verbesserung bzw. Veredelung von Brennstoffen betreffen eine bestimmte mechanische oder auch eine thermische Aufbereitung. Die Verbesserung oder Veredelung der Brennstoffe kann in einer Erhöhung des Heizwertes oder wie beim Schwelen in einer erhöhten Ausbeute der Teergewinnung bestehen. Vorliegende Erfindung bezweckt eine Verbesserung bekannter Verfahren zum Schwelen von Braunkohle und geht von der Erkenntnis aus, daß mittels elektromagnetischer Strahlen Eingriffe in den molekularen Stoffaufbau der Brennstoffe erreicht werden können, welche die thermische Aufbereitung der Brennstoffe in einfachster Weise wirkungsvoll beeinflussen und die Verfahren zur Verbesserung bzw. Dieser wird jedoch erheblich vergrößert und damit der Schwelvorgang von Brennstoffen wie Braunkohle und ölhaltigem Schiefer im Sinne einer besseren Ausbeute günstig beeinflußt, wenn erfindungsgemäß diese Stoffe während der thermischen Behandlung mit elektromagnetischen Strahlen mittels Röntgenstrahlen behandelt werden. Es hat sich herausgestellt, daß nicht eine Behandlung mit irgendeiner elektromagnetischen Strahlung zu einem Fortschritt beim Schwelen von Braunkohle u. dgl. führt, sondern daß es gerade · Röntgenstrahlen sind, mit denen die fortschrittliche Einwirkung hervorgerufen werden kann. Röntgenstrahlen unterscheiden sich von den übrigen elektromagnetischen Strahlungsarten in mancherlei Beziehung; insbesondere /besteht hinsichtlich der Wellenlänge ein erheblicher Unterschied.
