Abstract

The stiffener (1) is made from a fibre-reinforced thermoplastic or thermosetting material with reinforcing fibres which are curved so they lie parallel to the generating surface of the stiffener. The fibres include some (Fl) which are the same length as the whole stiffener and others (Fc) which are shorter and comprise 0 - 90 per cent of the stiffener's volume. The reinforcing fibres are of glass, carbon or polyamides, and have a diameter of 0.05 - 0.8 mm or 0.8 - 3 mm, depending on whether the stiffener is made by thermoforming, moulding, compression, injection or pultrusion or by overmoulding or coextrusion.
