Abstract

The breaker includes two identical modules connected in series between the two lines of a high voltage dc distribution network. Each module includes two series resistors (R1,R2) in parallel with two circuit breakers (D1,D2). An isolating switch (S) is connected in series with the two resistors. A fault detector (DD) with two inputs measures the current generated by a current transformer and the voltage. By analysing this information the detector can identify a fault. Each resistor includes a number of carbon matrix polymer disks (13) with metallised surfaces. These disks are separated by copper disks (14) the whole structure being flanked by two metal plates (11,12). The structure is then enclosed in an envelope filled with a dielectric gas.
