Process for the production of cathodes for glow discharge paths,

The cathode according to the invention can be manufactured in the way -
that potassium is first distilled into the tubes in a known manner; whereby
the electrodes, in particular the cathode, are coated with a layer of potassium.

Metall bedeckt sich auch im legierten Zustand mit einer dünnen oberflächlichen Oxydschicht;
The use of aluminum as an electrode material is not only beneficial because it is easily alloyed with potassium, but this metal is also covered in the alloyed state with a thin superficial layer of oxide; which protects the underlying potassium content of the cathode from attack by the ions. The layer thickness can be adjusted so Üaß - the electron work function with respect to: a pure potassium layer does not, or only insignificantly, is increased while the Zerstäuhbarkeit the cathode is greatly reduced. The low ignition voltage is hardly influenced by this. It is possible to use such cathodes and a neon or argon gas filling to produce a tube whose ignition voltage is far below 80 volts. The alloy between aluminum and potassium is produced in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere, for example in a nitrogen or noble gas atmosphere, since the alloy formed cannot be kept in air.
