Description
The present invention relates to a side mirror for vehicles and is applicable to a vehicle side mirror that can remove water drops, moisture and ice from its eyepiece lenses and object lenses by means of hot air or natural air flow.
Generally, a vehicle has a flat reflector type side mirror at the front lower corner of each front side window frame so that a driver can see what is behind him directly in the side mirror. Since such a flat reflector type side mirror is exposed on the outside, it is exposed to water drops, moisture and frost in bad weather such as rain or snow, making it difficult for the driver to see what is behind him. As a result, there is a risk of an accident.
Since the side mirror of the plane reflector type also has a rear view angle of, for example, 25º, its housing should protrude completely from the vehicle body (in the case of a passenger car, the projection is approximately 250 mm), which leads to a loss of fuel due to air resistance.
Furthermore, when driving at night, the light from the headlights of the following vehicle is reflected directly on the side mirror (with a reflection level of 50%), making the driver's view unclear. This results in Problem that the conventional side mirror leads to a lack of safety.
According to the invention, a mirror as characterized in claim 1 is created. Features can be found in the remaining claims.
Der Linsenaufbau kann gedreht werden, um einen weiten Bereich überwachen zu können.EP-A-0152181 discloses a monitoring device that can be mounted on the roof or rear of the car. The monitoring device has a television camera installed inside the car and a lens assembly mounted in a transparent weatherproof housing on the outside of the car. The lens assembly has a front lens group, a mirror arranged at an angle to the optical axis of the first lens group, and a rear lens group. Light passing through the front lens group is reflected by the mirror through the rear lens group to the television camera. The lens assembly can be rotated to enable a wide area to be monitored.
The air collector narrows to increase the air velocity therein and the resulting air jet is redirected by a laterally extending wall to sweep over the exposed mirror surface to remove water particles therefrom.
In one embodiment of the invention, the above-mentioned problems caused by the conventional side mirror of the plane reflector type are eliminated and a side mirror of a new lens type is provided, from which water drops, moisture and ice can be easily removed.
An embodiment of the invention provides a lens-type side mirror which can have a large rear-view angle and yet has a reduced extent of protrusion beyond the vehicle body compared to the conventional plane reflector-type side mirror.
An embodiment of the invention provides a lens-type side mirror in which the reflection factor of light emitted from the headlights of the following vehicle is greatly reduced during night driving.
An embodiment of the present invention provides a side mirror for a vehicle, comprising: a housing consisting of an inner tube member and an outer tube member, the housing having a main tube disposed outside the vehicle and extending in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, and a branch tube projecting laterally at a central portion of the main tube and disposed inside the vehicle and facing the driver's seat; an object lens system disposed in the rear portion of the main tube, the object lens system having at least one lens; an eyepiece lens system disposed in the branch tube, the eyepiece lens system having at least one lens; blowing means disposed at the front of the main tube and configured to direct a natural air flow or hot air onto both the outer surface of the outermost object lens of the object lens system and the outer surface of the outermost eyepiece lens of the eyepiece lens system; and reflectors located in the middle part of the main tube at a predetermined angle to the main tube and are designed so that they can reflect an image from the object lens system to the eyepiece lens system.
The present invention will become more apparent from the detailed description of the embodiments given below with reference to the accompanying figures, which are given for illustration purposes only and thus do not limit the present invention, in which:

Fig. 5 is a schematic diagram illustrating the manner in which the side mirrors are mounted on opposite sides of a vehicle according to one embodiment.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view for explaining the overall structure of a vehicle side mirror according to an embodiment. In Fig. 1, reference numeral 10 denotes a hollow housing 10 consisting of inner and outer tubular members 10a and 10b and having a substantially T-shape. The housing 10 has a main pipe 20 which is designed to be arranged outside the vehicle body and a branch pipe 30 which extends from the central part of the main pipe 20. and is designed to be arranged within the vehicle body.
In the main tube 20, an object lens system 40 and a blowing device 50 are arranged in the front and rear areas of the main tube 20, respectively.
On the other hand, an eyepiece lens system 60 is arranged inside the branch pipe 30. At the middle part, the main pipe 20 has a reflecting element 70 which has a predetermined angle to the eyepiece lens system 60.
The object lens system 40 has a first convex-concave lens 41 arranged at the rearmost point in the main tube 20, a second convex-concave lens 42 arranged inside the first convex-concave lens 41 and a biconcave lens 43 arranged at the innermost point of the main tube 20.
The eyepiece lens system 60 has a plano-convex lens 61, which is arranged at the outermost position in the branch pipe 30, and a concave-convex lens 62, which is arranged inside the plano-convex lens 61.
The reflective element 70 is described as a plane mirror in accordance with the illustrated embodiment of the present invention, but is not limited to this, and a triangular prism may be used instead.
On the other hand, the blowing device 50 comprises a cover plate 51 which is fixed to the front end of the main pipe 20 and is provided with a plurality of air holes 51a, and a movable plate 52 which is arranged inside the cover plate 51 and is provided with a number of air holes 52a which have the same size as the air openings 51a of the cover plate 51. The movable plate 52 has oppositely suspended walls on both sides thereof. On one side of the movable plate 52, a tension spring 53 is provided which is attached at one end to the one suspended wall of the movable plate 52 and at the other end to the inner wall part of the housing 10 which faces the one suspended wall of the movable plate 52. The tension spring 53 can bias the movable plate 52 toward the one suspended wall of the movable plate 52 to prevent the air openings 52a of the movable plate 52 from aligning with the air openings 51a of the cover plate 51. On the other side of the movable plate 52, there is arranged a driving means 54 which is adapted to urge the movable plate 52 toward the inner wall portion of the casing 10 adjacent to the other wall of the movable plate 52 against the spring force of the tension spring 53 to align the air holes 52a of the movable plate 52 with the air holes 51a of the cover plate 51, thereby allowing air to enter the casing 10. The blowing means 50 also has an air guide 55 adapted to guide the air entering the casing 10 to the surface of the first convex-concave lens 41 of the object lens system 40 and the surface of the plano-convex lens 61 of the eyepiece lens system 60. Near the inlet of the air duct 55, a heater 56 is provided which heats the air which flows through the air openings 51a and 52a and then enters the air duct 55.
The blower 50 also has a filter 57 which is arranged at the front end of the air guide 55 and is designed to remove dust from the air entering the air guide 55 through the air openings 51a and 52a.
The blower device 50 may also include a fan 58, which is arranged between the filter 57 and the heater 56, in order to suck in air while the vehicle is stopped.
The driving means 54 has an electromagnet 54a fixed to the inner wall part of the housing 10 opposite to the other hanging wall of the movable plate 52 by means of a bracket 59, and a permanent magnet 54b fixed to the other hanging wall of the movable plate 52.
The movable plate 52 is slidably supported and guided by a pair of brackets, one of which is the bracket 59, the other of which is a bracket 59' secured to the inner wall portion of the housing 10 opposite to the one dependent wall of the movable plate 52. Normally, the movable plate 52 is biased by the tension spring 53 to move toward the bracket 59' so that the air openings 52a cannot align with the air openings 51a of the cover plate 51, thereby causing it to be held in a closed state. When it is desired to allow air to enter the housing 10, electric current is applied to the electromagnet 54a of the drive means 54 by means of a separate switch (not shown). By the cooperation of the electromagnet 54a with the permanent magnet 54b, the movable plate 52 is urged against the spring force of the tension spring 53 into a movement away from the bracket 59', that is, in the left direction (as viewed in Fig. 1) so that the air openings 52a thereof can be aligned with the air openings 51a of the cover plate 51, thereby causing them to be held in an open state.
Instead of the tension spring 53, other elastic means that have the same function can be used.
Alternatively, a number of tension springs 53 may be used together with an electromagnet 54a' and a permanent magnet 54b', as shown in Fig. 4.
The air guide 55 consists of a first guide tube 55a which extends through the main tube 20 to guide air to the surface of the first convex-concave lens 51 of the object lens system 40, and a second guide tube 55b which extends through the branch tube 30 to guide air to the surface of the plano-convex lens 61 of the eyepiece lens system 60.
The first and second guide tubes 55a and 55b are arranged in the form of a spiral between the inner and outer tube parts 10a and 10b of the housing 10. The first and second guide tubes 55a and 55b can be provided at their ends with nozzles 55a' and 55b for directing air onto the surfaces of the lenses 41 and 61, respectively.
The first and second guide tubes 55a and 55b may be separate tubes. Alternatively, they may be formed integrally with a space defined between the inner and outer tube parts 10a and 10b of the housing 10.
The side mirror having the above-described construction according to the embodiment is mounted on the front lower corner of each front side window frame of a vehicle so that its branch pipe 30 is disposed inside the vehicle and directed toward the driver's seat. Mounting of the side mirror can be easily achieved using a separate bracket without changing the existing structure of the vehicle.
The electrical power (12 volts) of the vehicle battery can be used as electrical power to operate the heating device 56, the fan 58 and the electromagnet 54a.
Now, the operation of the side mirror according to the embodiment is described below.
Under the condition that a side mirror according to the embodiment is mounted on each side of the vehicle, as shown in Fig. 5, an image indicating the area behind the vehicle is incident on the side mirror and is reduced at a predetermined reduction scale by the first convex-concave lens 41, the second convex-concave lens 52, and then magnified to a predetermined magnification scale by the biconcave lens 43, as shown in Fig. 2. The image magnified by the biconcave lens 43 passes through the concave-convex lens 62 of the eyepiece lens system 60 via the reflecting element 70 and then through the plano-convex lens 61, so that an image with a predetermined magnification scale is obtained. That is, the rays passing through the concave-convex lens 62 are changed into parallel rays by the plano-convex lens 61. Accordingly, the driver can see what is behind the vehicle through the magnified image by looking at the image formed on the plano-convex lens 61.
In fact, the size, namely the magnification scale of the image formed on the plano-convex lens 61 of the eyepiece lens system 60 is determined by the precise combination of the dimensions of the lenses 41, 42 and 43 of the object lens system 40 so that an image with a desired magnification scale is obtained. Accordingly, it is possible to obtain a view with a wide angle of view and with an enlarged scale by adjusting the diameter of the Housing of the object lens system 40, which is exposed on the vehicle exterior, is reduced, that is, the diameter of the housing 10 is reduced to a minimum and yet the image on the eyepiece lens of the eyepiece lens system 60, that is, the image on the plano-convex lens 61, is sufficiently magnified.
Although the angle of alignment of the reflective element 70 is 45° to form an angle of 90° between the main pipe 20 and the branch pipe 30 of the housing 10 in the illustrated embodiment, it may vary. For example, with the angle of alignment of 35°, an angle of 70° may be formed between the main pipe 20 and the branch pipe 30 of the housing 10.
On the other hand, when it is necessary to remove water drops, moisture and ice from the convex-concave lens 41 of the object lens system 40 or the plano-convex lens 61 of the eyepiece lens system 60 during the running of the vehicle, an electric power is applied to the electromagnet 54a of the drive device 54 so that the electromagnet 54a is activated. By the activation of the electromagnet 54a, an attraction takes place between the electromagnet 54a and the permanent magnet 54b, causing the movable plate 52 to be moved away from the bracket 59' against the force of the tension spring 53. As a result, the air holes 52a of the movable plate 52 are aligned with the air holes 51a of the cover plate 51 as shown in Fig. 3, thereby allowing air to enter the blower 50. The air that has entered the blower 50 is filtered by the filter 57 and then enters the interior of the air guide 55.
Through the nozzles 55a' and 55b' the incoming air is directed onto the surface of the convex-concave lens 41 of the object lens system 40 and onto the surface of the plano-convex lens 61 of the eyepiece lens system 60 via the first and second guide gates 55a and 55b respectively disposed between the inner and outer tube portions 10a and 10b of the housing 10, thereby removing water drops or moisture from the surfaces.
When frost or ice is formed on the lenses 41 and 61 and is hardly removed by natural wind, an electric current is applied to the heater 56 to heat the incoming air. As a result, a hot air is generated which can easily remove frost or ice from the lenses 41 and 61.
Even during the stop of the vehicle, the same effect as described above can be obtained by operating the blower 58 under the condition that the movable plate 52 is kept in its open position, thereby forcibly flowing air through the first and second guide pipes 55a and 55b.
Since the first and second guide tubes 55a and 55b are arranged in a spiral shape between the inner and outer tube parts 10a and 10b of the housing 10, moisture existing between adjacent lenses can be removed during the mounting of the lenses or during use by flowing a hot air heated by the operation of the heater 56. Accordingly, it is possible to prevent the clarity of the image from being deteriorated due to moisture. In particular, it is unnecessary to maintain a vacuum during the mounting of the lenses, thereby improving the workability in the mounting and thus reducing the manufacturing cost. There is also an effect that maintenance is simplified. Furthermore, during night driving, the light emitted from headlights of the following vehicle is absorbed by the object lens system and the eyepiece lens system as it passes through the lens systems, thereby causing the amount of reflected light to decrease greatly. Accordingly, an improvement in safety during night driving is achieved.
