Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a process for reducing residual chlorine in hardwood pulp that has previously been bleached using chlorine-containing chemicals.
Cellulose pulp, especially that obtained by sulphate cooking, is brown, which is mainly due to lignin remaining in the pulp. The current understanding is that lignin is bound to hemicellulose via covalent bonds. Lignin is removed by bleaching, leaving the pulp usable for high quality paper and board products.
Bleaching is usually carried out in a multi-stage process in which the pulp is treated alternately with oxidizing chemicals that break down lignin and with chemicals that dissolve these degradation products. Substances containing chlorine have mainly been used as oxidizing agents, such as pure chlorine gas, chlorine dioxide, or sodium or potassium hypochlorite, although other bleaching agents that do not contain chlorine are also known. Alkali solutions are known as extraction chemicals that remove the degradation products.
During the reaction, the chlorine-containing chemicals cause a Chlorination of lignin, as well as of any fats or resins present in the pulp. Therefore, chlorophenols are produced by the lignin in the bleaching process, which ultimately escape from the pulp with the waste water. Furthermore, chlorine is bound to the lignin and acid residues remaining in the cellulose pulp after bleaching. Recently, this residual chlorine has been increasingly perceived as an environmental burden, since paper and cardboard products made from it end up as waste, and restrictions on the permissible chlorine content of pulp are therefore to be expected in the near future. Such restrictions will particularly affect pulps from which cardboard for food packaging is made. This problem is particularly pronounced when the pulp is obtained from hardwood, for example birch or eucalyptus, both of which have a high content of extractable substances that bind chlorine.
The aim of this invention is therefore to show a solution to the problem, with the help of which the content of residual chlorine remaining in bleached cellulose pulp made from hardwood can be reduced below the current level. The invention is characterized in that the pulp is subjected to an enzyme treatment and a treatment with chlorine-containing chemicals during the bleaching process, wherein hemicellulase, cellulase, esterase or mixtures thereof are used as said enzymes.
In früheren Studien wurde schon beobachtet, daß es ist möglich, mit Hilfe von Enzymen Lignin von Cellulose abzulösen, wie beispielsweise Vukan, L et al.: "Bleaching with enzymas", Biotechnology in the Pulp and Paper Industry, The third International Conference, Stockholm, June, 16-19, 1986, Seiten 67-69; Vukan, L. et al.: Nordisk Cellulosa, Vol 5, 1988, No. 2, Seiten 63, 65 und 66; M.G. Paice et al.: "Viscosity-Enhancing Bleaching of Hardwood Kraft Pulp with Xylanase from Cloned Gene" Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Vol, 32, July 1988, Seiten 235-239; Chauvet, J.M. et al.: "Assistance in bleaching of never-dried pulps by the use of xylanases, consequences on pulp properties" Fourth International Symposium on Wood and Pulping Chemistry, April 27-30, 1987, Paris-Palais des Congrès, Seiten 325-327.In previous studies it has been observed that it is possible to separate lignin from cellulose with the help of enzymes, for example Vukan, L et al.: "Bleaching with enzymas", Biotechnology in the Pulp and Paper Industry, The third International Conference, Stockholm, June, 16-19, 1986, pages 67-69; Vukan, L. et al.: Nordisk Cellulosa, Vol 5, 1988, No. 2, pages 63, 65 and 66; MG Paice et al.: "Viscosity-Enhancing Bleaching of Hardwood Kraft Pulp with Xylanase from Cloned Gene" Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Vol, 32, July 1988, pages 235-239; Chauvet, JM et al.: "Assistance in bleaching of never-dried pulps by the use of xylanases, consequences on pulp properties" Fourth International Symposium on Wood and Pulping Chemistry, April 27-30, 1987, Paris-Palais des Congrès, pages 325-327.
The result of this is that if pulp obtained by cooking is first treated with enzyme, the use of chlorine-containing bleaching chemicals in the subsequent bleaching step can be eliminated, partially or even entirely. In the present invention, the observation has been made that by combining this enzyme treatment with a bleaching process in which chlorine-containing chemicals are used in a substantially standardized manner, the cellulose pulp will as a result have a residual chlorine content which is substantially lower than it would be in the absence of enzymes. According to the invention, the enzyme treatment can be carried out at any stage of the bleaching process. Thus, the pulp may be treated with enzyme in connection with one of the oxidation steps or with one of the extraction steps (alkali step) of the process, or between these steps, before the bleaching step or not until after these steps. The enzyme to be used is hemicellulase, cellulase, esterase or a mixture thereof; as preferred enzyme products Multifekt L 250 and Multifekt K are mentioned. The temperature during the enzyme treatment can be in the range of 10 ºC to 90 ºC, preferably 40 ºC to 70 ºC, and the pH value within the range of 3.0 to 7.5, preferably 4.0 to 6.0.
Another object of the invention is the use of enzyme to reduce residual chlorine in bleached cellulose pulp from hardwood. Suitable enzymes include hemicellulase, cellulase, esterase or a mixture thereof, for example Multifekt L 250 and Multifekt K. In accordance with the invention, the use of this enzyme in the bleaching process described above takes place in the manner described above.
More particularly, the use of the enzyme as taught by the invention relates to the reduction of the residual chlorine content of Cellulose pulp in the manufacture of cardboard or paper for food packaging. This is because increasingly strict requirements are being placed on the residual chlorine content of such cardboard and paper types, which ultimately end up as waste in landfills or incinerators, where the chlorine they contain can produce highly toxic dioxins when burned.

The invention is described in more detail below on the basis of laboratory experiments:
Eine ähnliche Pulpe wurde als Referenz-Probe in gleicher Weise behandelt, jedoch ohne Enzym-Anwendung.220 g of dry matter of a birch pulp obtained by sulphate cooking (dry matter content of the pulp: 10%) was slurried in 50 mM Na nitrate and buffered to pH 5 in such a way that the highest concentration of the mixture was 2.5%. Multifekt K enzymes were added so that a xylanase activity of 56 U per gram of pulp dry matter was achieved. The temperature during the enzyme treatment was 39 ºC and the treatment time was 20 hours. After the treatment, the pulp was separated using a Buchner filter and the pulp cake thus obtained was washed with deionized water with a washing ratio of 28. A similar pulp was treated in the same way as a reference sample, but without enzyme application.

The enzyme-treated pulp sample and the reference sample were then subjected to bleaching by means of five consecutive oxidation and extraction steps. In the first step, chlorine and chlorine dioxide were used as chemicals, in the second step, sodium hydroxide, in the third step, chlorine dioxide, in the fourth step, sodium hydroxide, and in the fifth step, chlorine dioxide. The total chlorine inputs for bleaching and the results of the measurements on the bleached pulp samples are presented in Table 1b below: TABLE Ib With enzyme treatment Without enzyme treatment (reference sample) Addition of active chlorine (mg/g pulp dry matter (2xKappa) Yield DKM Extract content Liquor ratio dm³/kg) Residual chlorine content (mg/g)
These results demonstrate that the residual chlorine content of the enzyme-treated sample after bleaching is considerably lower than that of the sample that did not undergo enzyme treatment. It can also be seen that no significant weakening of the strength values of the enzyme-treated sample occurred.
TABELLE IIA Mit Enzym-Vor behandlung Ohne Enzym Behandlung (Referenz-Probe) Kappa-Zahl DKM Extrakt-Gehalt (% Trockensubstanz) Flottenverhältnis (dm³/kg)In this experiment, three samples of pulp from the stock batch were used by sulphate cooking of birch wood with the same liquor ratio as those for Example 1. Two samples were treated with enzyme as set out above, while the third sample formed the reference sample. The enzymes here differed from those of Example 1 in that for one of the samples (Sample 1) a mixture was used which, in addition to the xylanase activity of 56 U per gram of pulp (dry matter), cellulase activity of 1.5 U per gram of pulp (dry matter), and for the other of the samples (Sample 2), in addition to the xylanase activity of 56 U per gram of pulp (dry matter), cellulase activity of 1.1 U per gram of pulp (dry matter). The results after enzyme treatment are shown in Table IIa. TABLE IIA With enzyme pretreatment Without enzyme treatment (reference sample) Kappa number DKM Extract content (% dry matter) Liquor ratio (dm³/kg)
TABELLE IIb Mit Enzym-Vor behandlung Ohne Enzym Behandlung (Referenz-Probe) Ausbeute DKM Extrakt-Gehalt Flottenverhältnis (dm³/kg) Restchlor-Gehalt (mg/g)The pulp samples were then bleached with chlorine-containing chemicals as described in Example 1. The total addition of chlorine was equal to twice the kappa number in each case. The results after bleaching are shown in Table IIb. TABLE IIb With enzyme pretreatment Without enzyme treatment (reference sample) Yield DKM Extract content Liquor ratio (dm³/kg) Residual chlorine content (mg/g)
The results obtained in this series also show that the enzyme treatment significantly reduces the residual chlorine content of the bleached pulp.
Bleached birch pulp from sulphate boiling was used for this experiment. This pulp was bleached with bleaching chemicals, namely in the first step with 90% chlorine and 10% chlorine dioxide, in the second step with sodium hydroxide and in the third step with oxygen.
The bleached pulp was subjected to an enzyme treatment under identical conditions as in Example 1. After treatment, the pulp was washed with water and dried at room temperature. The residual chlorine content was measured in both the enzyme-treated sample and the untreated, original bleached sulphate pulp, with the result that 1.18 mg/g in the former and 1.56 mg/g in the latter. were found. Therefore, the residual chlorine content of bleached pulp can be significantly reduced by enzyme treatment.
This experiment shows that the desired result can be obtained with the help of the invention, even if the cellulose pulp is first bleached and then treated with enzyme.
It is self-evident to a person skilled in the art that different embodiments of the invention are not limited to what is set out in the above examples and that they can vary within the scope of the claims below. For example, in the first step of a conventional five-step chlorine bleaching process, one can use either chlorine alone or chlorine mixed with chlorine dioxide. It is also possible that the time period during which the enzyme is allowed to act is comparably less than the stated time of 20 hours. Treatment times of a few hours, or even less than one hour, are conceivable, depending on the enzyme chosen and its activity.
