Description
The invention relates to a mask member that protects a part of an object from surface treatment such as plating, electroplating, vacuum deposition, phosphating and the like. More particularly, the invention relates to a mask member consisting of a pair of separate cylinder members, the mask member enveloping a periphery of a pillar or column member of an object by assembling or combining the pair of separate cylinder members. When surface treatment is performed on the surface of an object, and when the surface of the object has a part or parts on which the surface treatment should not be performed because another surface treatment is performed on the part or parts after the surface treatment or the surface treatment impairs the appearance of the object, etc., the part or parts of the surface of the object can be covered and protected with the mask member.
Heretofore, adhesive tape has been used as a masking member to protect a pillar, a frame, and the like. That is, the adhesive tape is wrapped around the pillar, the frame, and the like to protect them from surface treatment, and after surface treatment, the adhesive tape is removed from the pillar, the frame, and the like. The pillar, the frame, and the like cannot be affected by surface treatment because the pillar, the frame, and the like were covered with the adhesive tape during surface treatment.
However, adhesive tape as a masking member has defects in that applying the adhesive tape to a spar, a frame, and the like and removing it therefrom takes time and incurs high labor costs, and further, the adhesive tape wound around a spar, a frame, and the like is covered in the layer of surface treatment, and it is very difficult to find the outer end of the covered adhesive tape to remove the adhesive tape. These defects of the adhesive tape can seriously hinder a mass production line, e.g., a coating line for automobiles.
From EP-A-0 248 652 a one-piece expanding and shrinking part which is used as a mask part is known.
It is therefore an object of the invention to facilitate the use of mask parts on a part to be protected, e.g. a spar, a frame and the like. This object is solved with the features of the claims. The mask part can be attached to a spar, a frame and the like by bending the mask part along the groove(s) to envelop the spar, the frame and the like.

Fig. 1 bis 4 betreffen eine erste erfindungsgemäße Ausführungsform. According to Figs. 1 to 4, a mask part 112 is made up of a pair of separate cylinder parts 112A and 112B, and adhesive layers are formed on the inside of the pair of separate cylinder parts 112A and 112B, respectively. The inside of the mask part 112 is made of a polystyrene foam sheet 113, and the outside of the mask part 112 is made of an unfoamed polystyrene layer 114 laminated to the polystyrene foam sheet 113.
The pair of separated cylinder parts 112A and 112B are respectively attached to the periphery of a part 111A of a sill 111 of the door of an automobile by means of the adhesive layers 115 to fix the mask part 112, as shown in Fig. 2. After the part 111A of the sill 111 is covered with the mask part 112 consisting of the pair of separated cylinder parts 112A and 112B, the sill 111 is coated by spraying with a paint 116, as shown in Fig. 3, and the part 111A of the sill 111 covered with the mask part 112 is not coated with the paint 116. After coating, the pair of separated cylinder parts 112A and 112B of the mask part 112 are respectively removed from the part 111A of the beam 111, and the beam 111 has the part 111A not coated with the paint, as shown in Fig. 4. In this embodiment, the polystyrene foam sheet 113, which has a low solvent resistance and a low heat resistance, is protected by the unfoamed polystyrene layer 114 covering the outside of the polystyrene foam sheet 113, so that the mask part 112 has an improved solvent resistance and an improved heat resistance, and the mask part 112 cannot deform when the mask part 112 is heated to about 150 ºC during a drying process so that the mask part 112 can be reused.
Fig. 5 und 6 betreffen eine zweite erfindungsgemäße Ausführungsform. According to Figs. 5 and 6, a mask part 122 consists of a pair of separate cylinder parts 122A and 122B, and two recessed parts 123 are formed in both edges of one separate cylinder part 122A, and two insertion parts 124 are formed in both edges of the other separate cylinder part 122B. The mask part 122 is made of a polystyrene in which 30 wt.% calcium carbonate is mixed. The pair of separated cylinder parts 122A and 122B are each fixed to the periphery of a part 121A of a spar 121, and the insertion parts 124 of the separated cylinder part 122B are respectively inserted into the recessed parts 123 of the separated cylinder part 122A to fix the separated cylinder part 122B respectively, and the mask part 122 is thus composed of the pair of separated cylinder parts 122A and 122B as shown in Fig. 6. After surface treatment, the separated cylinder parts 122A and 122B are each removed from the part 121A of the spar 121 by hand, hook or the like.
Fig. 7 betrifft eine dritte erfindungsgemäße Ausführungsform. Fig. 7 relates to a third embodiment of the present invention. According to Fig. 7, a mask part 132 is made of a pair of separate cylinder parts 132A and 132B made of an elastic material, and clamp parts 133 are formed on both edges of the separate cylinder parts 132A and 132B, respectively. The pair of separate cylinder parts 132A and 132B are each fitted on the periphery of a part 131A of a beam 131, and are fixed by compressing the part 131A of the beam 131 between the clamp parts 131 of the separate cylinder parts 132A and 132B, respectively, and assembling the mask part 132 from the separate cylinder parts 132A and 132B.
The mask part according to the invention is made of an elastic sheet, e.g. of plastics such as polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, melamine resin, urea resin and the like; plastic foams of plastics, laminated sheets of plastic foams and plastics; fibrous webs such as fabrics, knitted fabrics, non-woven textiles, paper, corrugated cardboard and the like; fibrous webs impregnated with thermoplastic resin; fibrous webs impregnated with thermosetting resin; wooden webs such as wood panels, hardboards, plywood and the like; metal webs and the like.
When the mask member is made of plastic, it is desirable to mix inorganic fillers such as calcium carbonate, talc, bentonite, stone powder, blast furnace slag, fly ash and the like into the plastic, since the heat resistance, mechanical properties and the like of the mask member are improved by the inorganic filler, and further, when a used mask member is burned in an incinerator, a small combustion energy is generated so that the incinerator has a long life. Usually, 10 to 500 parts by weight of the inorganic filler is mixed into the plastic, preferably 20 to 400 parts by weight. Polyolefins, e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene and the like, are preferred plastics for the material of the mask member of the present invention because the polyolefin has high solvent resistance and is inexpensive, and of course, polyolefin to which the inorganic filler is added is a preferred material for the mask member. Polystyrene foam is also a preferred material for the mask member because the polystyrene foam is light and inexpensive. Since the polystyrene foam has low solvent resistance and low heat resistance, it is preferably used to laminate a suitable plastic on the polystyrene foam.
