Description
Tin-plated articles made of copper or copper alloys It is known from the patent 641 168 that tin alloy coatings with 15 to 50 % antimony or 30 to 70% bismuth or 6 to 2.5% silver prevent the occurrence of black spots. The origin of the black spots has been explained in the patent mentioned.
It has now been shown that tinning with one of the alloys of 15 to 50 0/0 antimony causes difficulties. These difficulties consist in the fact that when the coating solidifies, it is not a uniform, smooth structure but a rough coating. Such a rough coating, however, is necessary for devices that are used with foodstuffs, e.g. B. milk and its products come into contact, unsuitable. The rough surfaces can contribute to the development of bacterial foci and thus be harmful to milk and its products; in the case of heating devices, they also promote the burning-on of residues and generally make cleaning more difficult.
The cause of the roughening of the coatings is that the Alloys with 15 to 50% antimony when solidifying more or less -size antimony grains in addition to creating purer tin. This is explained by the fact that namely tin and antimony do not form an actual eutectic alloy and so when they solidify the antimony separates itself first and the tin still remains liquid. Of the Melting point of the ariti-. namely, pug is at 63o ° C, but that of pewter at 232 ° C.
It has now been found that an addition of copper to the alloys with 15 to 50% antimony eliminates this problem. The copper causes the antimony grains to be so finely distributed that a smooth, uniform coating is created.
