Description
Process for the production of waterproof fibrous webs The subject of the invention forming process is used to produce waterproof textiles (fabrics), which the advantages and partly the character of oilcloth b @ es sit, d. H. really waterproof are without the defects of these products, i. i. Brittleness, great weight, softness in the heat and often brittleness in the cold.
It is known to use linseed oil, varnish and drying oils of various kinds to use to create waterproof fabrics by brushing on them, whereby a fabric covered with a waterproof layer @ is produced. With strong However, such a superficial layer is not sufficient for fabrics such as sailcloth on the other hand, soaking them with varnish would make the fabric difficult and too little Make pliable, so that this method is not used for such goods can. It has also been shown that the varnish gradually crumbles the fabric fiber.
It has also been proposed to impregnate waterproof fabrics with a solution of paraffin in gasoline, which is also a solution of rubber in linseed oil may be admixed to produce; also solutions of rubber and gutta-percha in Gasoline are described for this purpose. However, these methods do not deliver the waterproof tent sheets required by the trade and are also technical and economically not advantageous because the use of gasoline as a solvent special facilities and always associated with a loss of gasoline is; furthermore, such methods only permit one operation, which in most Cases for the actual sealing of the substances is not sufficient. -Used on the other hand the process forming the subject of the invention only uses aqueous solutions or emulsions and allows repeated operations as required, since this is done on the fiber precipitated substances do not go back into solution in a subsequent operation to be brought.
It has now been shown, surprisingly, that you can get a waterproof Fabrics and the like with the particular advantages of an oil cloth, but without its disadvantages obtained if an aqueous emulsion is used as the impregnating agent, made from linseed oil varnish in which rubber, including vulcanized rubber, is dissolved, and, a soap solution, which expediently also contains colloidal substances such as glue, casein, starch, incorporated is available.
If you are using such an emulsion that is kept appropriately warm is (5o to 8o ° C), the raw material is soaked and the squeezed material through a dilute acid, e.g. B: 2% formic acid or an acid salt, runs like this the emulsion is destroyed; and the water-insoluble parts, i.e. varnish, rubber particles, fall out by filling the pores of the fabric fiber. At the same time are doing this also the colloids, like glue, starch, casein, from the fatty and rubber particles permeated, so that they too become water-insoluble. While the drying of the impregnated fabric, the linseed oil is oxidized, without. a special self-heating of the impregnated fabric would occur. It has been found that with such an impregnation a harmful or grueling effect on the fiber does not occur. If you are indifferent to the varnish When substances such as paraffin are added, the impregnated goods are given a corresponding effect different character. You can add decomposable salts to the impregnation agent itself, such as B. acetic acid or formic acid ammonium, incorporated, which then when heated disintegrate into their components during drying; an acid residue remains here which only evaporates after prolonged heating, which destroys the emulsion and an effect similar to that of carrying out the operation with the emulsion is produced soaked goods through an acid bath. Embodiment z parts of varnish are heated with i part of appropriately crushed vulcanized rubber to about 15o up to i80 °, until everything is evenly solved. A far-reaching change occurs here the character of the rubber particles. Preparation of the emulsion Dissolve in i oo l water i o kg curd soap, stir separately in i oo 1 water i o kg starch and Add 5 kg of casein cold, add about 31 ammonia, mix the two liquids and heated with constant stirring to about go °, so that swelling of the starch occurs. In this liquid, which is kept at the temperature of about 7o to 9o °. will, 50 kg of the varnish rubber solution are then stirred in.
The result is a uniform emulsion that is suitable for impregnation is.
Other known emulsifiers can be used instead of soap Use bodies which exert such an effect, e.g. B. alkylated naphthalenesulfonic acids.
