Abstract

There is described a process for enhancing the resistance to external influences, for example weathering, washing, wet and dry cleaning, solvents, fats, oils, mechanical abrasion, etc., of prints on absorbent substrates, for example stock, fabric or fleece. For this all of the substrate, or else only the areas where printing is to take place, is lacquered, impregnated, printed or coated, prior to the print proper, with an organic substance, preferably a lacquer or ink. Owing to their resistance to external influences, suitable binders for this purpose are those which crosslink chemically, specifically, owing to the good adhesion properties, epoxy resin lacquers combined with an appropriate hardener component. The effect of the lacquering is, on the one hand, to improve in particular integration of the surface-near fibres, which will carry the bulk of the subsequently applied printing ink and therefore are particularly important for the permanence of the printed image. Yet it also serves to narrow the large interstices and pores between the individual fibres to such an extent that the printing ink, which is after all applied in a very limited volume, can penetrate very deeply into these thin capillaries and hence will offer hardly any area of attack for a possible ink removal mechanism. The latter effect is appreciably enhanced by the admixture of fillers in the binder, since this produces a large number of further micropores for the printing ink to penetrate and from which it will be very difficult to remove.
