Description
Process for the saccharification of cellulosic substances such as wood, with mineral acids If cellulosic substances, such as wood, are used according to known methods Saccharified by digestion using mineral acids, this results in addition to the soluble ones Carbohydrates one in their amount mainly on the type of plant material dependent amount of acetic acid. According to the invention, this acetic acid is used for digestion the cellulose made usable and thus the amount of acid required is significant degraded. This is achieved by so long the acetic acid in the Breakdown process back until their concentration has increased strongly. Only then do you begin to apply the newly formed acetic acid in suitable places out of the process and win.
For example, during the saccharification of softwood by means of concentrated hydrochloric acid to acetic acid about q. % of the applied amount of dry Wood. The hydrochloric acid sugar solutions, which you get when digesting by means of concentrated Hydrochloric acid obtained by known methods, contain about 3o0 to sugar and approximately i, 8% acetic acid. When these solutions are evaporated, most of the acetic acid goes in the hydrochloric acid distillate, which after enrichment with H Cl gas again to the Unlocking is returned. By according to the invention the acetic acid-containing Waste hydrochloric acids from the saccharification of wood in this way for a while to be broken down If new amounts of wood are used, digestion fluids and their content are obtained acetic acid gradually increases. Acetic acid has been found to to increase the disintegration capacity of. Hydrochloric acid, in such a way that for ¢ parts of acetic acid present in the solution, 1 part of hydrogen chloride in the concentration otherwise necessary for unlocking can be spared. if so the acetic acid, for example, to a concentration of 12 percent by weight this acid need also contain 37 percent by weight of HCl, to be equivalent in the digestion to a hydrochloric acid free of acetic acid of 40% H Cl to be. This reduces the amount of hydrogen chloride required for the digestion is necessary by about 8% of the otherwise circulating amount of HCl. aside from that the sugar solutions that arise during digestion are considerably poorer in H Cl than usual. This increases their shelf life and the persistence of sugar when Evaporation of these solutions significantly improved.
When the state is reached that the the most favorable amount of acetic acid is available, one begins from Acetic acid added to newly digested material should be eliminated from the circulation. They are removed, for example, from the condensate that occurs when the wood sugar solutions are evaporated arises through fractional distillation.
Part of the acetic acid is bound by the non-saccharifiable part of the cellulose-containing materials, since the lignin is partially acetylated by hydrochloric acid with a high concentration of acetic acid. This is a particular advantage for certain uses of the lignin. But you can also split off the bound acetic acid, z. B. by heating with 2% hydrochloric acid under pressure to I 10 to I20 °.
It is already known that cellulosic substances such as wood, instead of mineral acids also 'with organic acids such as formic acid or acetic acid, can unlock if you have this in the presence of a small amount of mineral acids (about 15 to 20%) can act on the cellulosic substances while being heated. It works. the added mineral acid as a kind of catalyst. The through the Organic acid otherwise occurring esterification of the cellulose is caused by the addition the relatively small amount of mineral acid directed towards saccharification. Very large amounts of organic acid are required to carry out this process; the mixture must be left to stand for several hours and then a few more Heat to 45 ° and more for hours. This known method is therefore time consuming and expensive.
In contrast, in the method according to the invention, such as common, digested with mineral acid at ordinary temperature. Organic Acid is not added, but is a by-product of the digestion. You can enrich it in order to save mineral acid, and you can finally gain an excess of acetic acid.
