In the case of the apparatuses which are replaced by water or another suitable liquid
Prevent air from entering a drum as long as no liquid has been drained from it
the inconvenience that the liquid contained in the apparatus has been asserted so far
was thrown out by the gases developing in the barrel. Also were able to
Valves not to prevent the resultant reduction of the liquid in the apparatus.
The attached drawing shows a device by which this inconvenience is prevented and which acts safely and reliably. A second, narrower and at the bottom open vessel b was installed in the vessel α , in which the tube e inserted into the vessel is located. The air inlet opening o is either attached at the top or a pipe d is placed over the opening in the bottom, which is led almost to the lid of the vessel. If the liquid is now drained from the barrel, the air enters through the opening 0 and is guided through the pipe d to above the liquid contained in the vessel, then reaches the top of the vessel b and through the pipe e to the barrel. If gases rise from the barrel, they act first on the liquid inside the vessel b. Since this is now narrowed downwards and since the vessel α has a much larger cross-section than the vessel b , the pressure in the former is reduced, so that the liquid is no longer expelled through the air inlet opening under any circumstances.
