Das Schwefelhexafluorid hat eine sehr große Löschfähig -keit. Es ist fünfmal so schwer als die Luft und sinkt infolgedessen leicht zu Boden und hält sich somit gut bei Abdeckung von brennenden Objekten. Zudem ist seine Diffusionsgeschwindigkeit entsprechend dem hoben Molekulargewicht (1q.6) verhältnismäßig gering (das o,45fache der von Luft), so daß es auch aus diesem Grunde das Brandobjekt gut eingehüllt erhält. Weiterhin ist das Mittel so indifferent wie etwa Stickstoff. Es reagiert fast gar nicht mit anderen Stoffen, selbst nicht bei Erwärmung mit Natriummetall.
