Process for the hydrolysis of vinyl esters It is known that vinyl acetate
in alkaline or ammoniacal solution very easily to acetaldehyde and acetic acid
saponify. The saponification in an alkaline solution is very stormy
great heat development, but has the disadvantage that a large part of the formed
Acetaldehyde is polymerized or condensed and that acetic acid depending on
Type of alkali applied. in the form of their salts is obtained, thereby forming the alkali
is always used up and needs to be renewed. Furthermore, it has already been proposed
been, the saponification in acidic solution, e.g. B. with dilute sulfuric acid or
Phosphoric acid, etc., but the saponification is very slow
and constant heating and thorough stirring are necessary.
It has now been found that these disadvantages can be avoided
if you consider the hydrolysis of vinyl esters, such as vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, methylv
inyl acetate, in acidic solution in counter-hardness of mercury compounds as catalysts
undertakes. Inorganic acids such as sulfuric acid,
Phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc., or organic acids such as acetic acid, trichloroacetic acid
or niche of these, find use. As suitable mercury compounds
come - into consideration: Mercury acetate, -sttlfat, -otyd, -chloride or any
other organic or inorganic mercury compounds. The hydrolysis of vinyl compounds
runs depending on the type of vinyl compound used, the type and amount of added
Acid and the amount of the catalyst either by itself with spontaneous evolution of heat,
so that no external heat supply, but on the contrary often cooling is required,
or requires gentle heating to initiate the reaction.
The process can be used to advantage from polymerized
Vinyl compounds are the disturbing monomeric fractions that are often still present in them
to remove what is alkaline because of the risk of sweeping
Changes in the polymer are often not at all and more appropriate when used
Solution initiation is difficult to achieve.
füllt man 300 ccm To",l"iger Schwefelsäure, die 5- Quecksilberacetat
so gibt man weitere 300 ccm.
Man unterbricht
Ester vollkommen. freies Polymerisat.Example t In a 3-liter flask with a reflux condenser attached to the side, 300 cc to "l" sulfuric acid containing 5- mercury acetate is poured in from a dropping funnel and slowly acetaldehyde begins to escape. Vinyl acetate is then allowed to continue to flow in at such a rate that the temperature remains at 60 ° to 70 °. Acetaldehyde escapes through the cooler, the cooling water of which is kept at 30 °, and can be absorbed in the water. Entrained acetic acid and vinyl acetate condense in the condenser itself and flow back into the reaction vessel. When about 700 to 800 g of vinyl acetate have been added, a further 300 cc is added. Add water and continue adding vinyl acetate until the reaction begins to become sluggish. One then interrupts and distills most of the fairly concentrated acetic acid over. After adding up to 300 ccm of water, the residue is ready for further saponification. The yield of both acetaldehyde and acetic acid is quantitative. Side reactions that lead to the formation of ethylidene diacetate and resin formation do not occur. Example e 2 kg of polymeric vinyl acetate, which is viscous and sticky due to its content of monomeric components, are heated on the water bath with one liter of 10% sulfuric acid in which 10 g of mercury sulfate are dissolved and kneaded well until no acetaldehyde more escapes. The sulfuric acid is then poured off and the remaining sulfuric acid and the acetic acid formed by the saponification are removed by repeated treatment with water. After cooling, a completely non-sticky, monomeric ester remains. free polymer.
