Bei ortsbeweglichen elektrischen Geräten aus Metall oder mit einem Metallgehäuse ist es üblich, das Metallgehäuse mit einem Ansatz in Form eines Kragens zu versehen, der zur Aufnahme des Anschlußsteckers dient und einen Berührungsschutz gewährt. Man kann diesen Metallkragen gleichzeitig zur Übertragung eines Schutzkontaktes verwenden. Das geschieht dadurch, daß man den Gerätestecker mit einem an die Erd- oder Nullleitung angeschlossenen Schutzkontaktstück versieht, das beim Einführen in den Schutzkragen mit diesem in Berührung kommt.
Bei Installationssteckdosen, wie sie z. B. in Wohnungen verwendet werden, ist eine derartige Anordnung bisher nicht möglich gewesen. Die Wohnungssteckdosen haben nämlich kein Metallgehäuse, sondern eine Umhüllung aus Isolierstoff.
