Method of bookbinding.

This method of binding books is illustrated by the following drawing.

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a book trimmed at right angles, the back of which is provided with horizontal lines cdefg for later sawing through the back; a diagonally drawn line AB serves as a guide for the bookbinder and shows him later that all the sections of the book are in the right place.

The subject of this invention is the manufacture of a seam and the tying of Books of all kinds without having to sew the individual sheets. The procedure here is following:

The individual sheets of the book are folded and in the order specified by the printer Order placed on top of each other.

The whole book is trimmed at the front and bottom in the paper machine, likewise on the upper page and finally on the spine, so that the book is now only still consists of individual leaves. Care must be taken that the cuts are completely right-angled be.

Now draw horizontal lines with a pencil at equal intervals across the book to mark the later saw cuts, as can be seen in Fig. 1 at c, d, e, f, g . A diagonal line from A to B is also drawn across the book. Then you cover the spine of the book with a thin layer of glue.

When the glue is dry, the book is divided into sections of 4 to 8 sheets each (without that, however, the leaves must be counted exactly) divided and again in the correct position Order put together.

The bookbinder now places the first section on his left, the second on his right, the third to the left on the first and the fourth to the right on the second and so on. through the whole book until finally all the odd sections on the left and the even sections lie on the right.

Each of the parts of the book formed in this way is then straightened and sawn, or both parts can be placed on top of one another in the manner shown in Fig. 2, in order then to saw both parts at the same time. Strips of paper muslin Z, 1.5 cm wide, have now been glued over the back edge of the first and last section and protrude about 1/2 inch over the sides of the same (Fig. 4, hkil). This is done in order to give the threads in the book spine more hold, since the first and last sections have to withstand the entire pull of the book covers.
