Description
Process for the production of a whitening agent for enamels and Glazes titanium dioxide and cerium oxide are thanks to their very high refraction exponents, and because they can be produced in the finest distribution and in the glass rivers are poorly soluble, excellent opacifiers. But to this extent they have a unpleasant appearance as they are easily enamelled or glazed give a yellowish tinge. This is repeatedly pointed out in the literature been. The cause of this cannot be determined precisely because the starting material is the same and the same email already small unconscious changes in the way of working a different one The intensity of the discoloration.
According to the present invention, this yellowish tinge is now the accept both oxides as opacifiers, eliminated. This happens because the two oxides with small amounts, about 2 to 10 per cent., of other colorless oxides polyvalent elements, which are essentially in the III., IV. and V._ group of the periodic Systems stand, displaced and this mixture glows. Aluminum oxide can be used as additives, Kaolin, quartz, the colorless oxides of the rare earths, tin dioxide, zirconium dioxide, Antimony oxides and niobium pentoxide. However, the cerium also has the same effect on the titanium from or the titanium on the cerium, so that z. B. a titanium dioxide, with about 5% ceria annealed, results in a perfect opacifier. It can be assumed that this Additions of colorless oxides during the annealing process, the physico-chemical properties of the titanium dioxide and cerium oxide so that they are burned into the enamel or glazes can no longer be changed with the appearance of the yellow tinge, in any case on strongly colored solid solutions with coloring oxides, which are impurities in which opacifiers are already present or come from the glaze is.
